Steve Nash, began my love for the sport of basketball….
I remember it exactly, February 9, 2003 around 8:00 pm. My father was in the living room watching TV with me, but there wasn’t anything on really so I kept of channel surfing. Then I stumbled upon TNT. It was the 2003 NBA All-star game in Atlanta, I stopped their while the Canadian anthem was being sung. While O’Canada proceed cameras tune in onto one man’s face who stood with pride. I titled my head, raised my eyebrows, and looked at his face very closely and I thought…”hmm not bad.”
As the game proceeded the only faces that were familiar to me were the legendary Michael Jordan, the great Kobe Bryant, the “Whoa he’s Asian” Yao Ming, and of course the fat basTURD Shaquille O’Neal. Then I see a rather short player or short compared to the other players come into the game. I saw that pale skin, the mid-long chestnut brown hair flowing in the wind as he brought the basketball up and down the court with the tip of his tongue sticking out. Then it was official, I was intrigued, I was attracted, I found a man who fit all my standards physically, he was short or so I thought but I was later disappointed to find out that he was 6’3,” he was pale, and ugly with mid-long flowy dark hair and bright eyes. “UGLY!?!?!” you must be asking why would I want somebody ugly, well let me explain. Okay when you first look at Steve Nash you don’t initially think “damn he’s gorgeous,” Steve Nash has this appeal about him that is so intriguing that you want to learn more about him, let‘s just say Nash has personality appeal rather than sex appeal. After further research, I wasn’t disappointed at all to what I learned about this individual. To find out that Steve Nash was a kind, charismatic, soft-spoken, intelligent, talented man…I was impressed , to be all that and remain to be a great, humble athlete just bugled my mind…”why the hell was this man not married?" Steve Nash can be simply described as a likable guy. He was my goal, well not quite him, but my goal was to find "the next Steve Nash," whoever that my be they don't necessarily have to be a star like him, as long as that person loved the gamed and represent it well.
The first actual Maverick game I watched on TV was on Valentines day, it was the Mavs against the Memphis Grizzlies, then I watched the next couple games against Heat, Spurs, Rockets, Wizards, and the Kings. To be honest the first three games I only watched Nash and not the ball, but the more I watched the more I became intrigued by this sport. It was the Wizards game, fourth quarter I became hooked, and the game against the Sacramento Kings on February 27, I made a realization that this team was actually good, well obviously since the were number one in standings…even though they lost that game by two points. From then on I was hooked to basketball. Then on March 16, 2003 my all time favorite Maverick game it was against the Sacramento Kings, this game made me realize that not only are they a good team, but Steve Nash was amazing, the Big 3 including Van Exel represented how a team should be…they represented talent, skill, chemistry, and camaraderie...I loved it!
From then on I've stuck by them. People thought I would stop being a Maverick fan because Steve Nash left, but mind you I am no bandwangoner nor am I a basketball groupie. I am a Steve Nash fan, by god I adore the man...but I love the Mavericks more. Though my love for the Mavs is almost unconditional but you have to understand it's tough love, I'm not a pessimist just a realist.
So there’s my story…condensed.
I hope I have not bored you.

Nice to see you posting here Rochelle
My story is pretty simple, I was just starting to get into basketball and decided to watch it on TV. IT was playoff time, Dallas vs Portland -- Dirk dominating. What was it? 3 40+ point games?
I liked the Mavs style of play, so I just leeched onto their bandwagon..But I've become a bigger fan by the day and now I'm obsessed

I am from Oklahoma so naturally I go for the teams closest to my homestate (actually Just the Cowboys and Mavs). I went through a long spell of not watching ball and I saw Durk play once. I loved his offensive game and then I started watching as many Mavs games as I could. I then watched Nash and Fin and fell in love with the team. But I could do without Nellie.

Why are you a Mavs fan: The first time I really got into basketball was playing NBA Jam in like 95-96, and I remember Jason Kidd was a monster. So I decided I was a Mavs fan. When you're that young, it's pretty simple.

And no, I wasn't a Wizards/Bullets fan because I lived in Virginia and while they were the closest team to me, they weren't my hometown team.

Dirk was pretty much what made me like the Mavs. He's such a unique player, and he's a guy that I can't see anybody disliking.
Plus, believe it or not, Cuban contributed as well. It's just cool to see an owner down on the floor that cares so much.
