Who is the PG of our future?

Let's get some facts down

Devin Harris is 21
Jason Terry is 26

Devin Harris is considered to be a pass-first guard
Jason Terry is considered to be a combo-guard

Devin Harris started at the beginning of the season
Jason Terry is the starter now
--------------

This thread title is wrong, it's more like our PG position discussion, but I thought my title is more enticing

Devin Harris is very talented, I mean why else would Don Nelson start a rookie at the beginning of the season. But as the season progressed, Devin got worse and his playing time diminshed to next to nothing. His confidence was shattered, and you could see that he was really struggling in the 3 or so minutes he was getting.

In comes Jason Terry, everyone thought he would be the starter for us in pre-season but something happened, something that put him behind Darrell fricking Armstrong. Terry has lead this team to greatness, something like 17-6 and defending much better

So, whats this got to do with anything

a) How much longer do you think Jason Terry will be starting for
b) In 3 years, who will be better
c) How good will Devin Harris be
d) How far can we go with Jason Terry

It's really hard to tell who will be the future pg. Harris should be the starter in about 2 years, imo. His biggest problem is his lack of experience right now. He must learn how to run the team. This could take some time. If the mavs start him instead of Terry, this could cost them their title chances. Terry really is more of a combo point guard but your starting pg mustn't have to be a pass first point guard. At least not when he fits into the system and if other players can create for themselves. so long.....

a) I'm still not sure if Terry is the mavs next years pg. I still think the mavs are looking for another pg. If they don't bring in someone other, he is definetly not the worst pick. So if he stays, he will start for the next 2 seasons while splitting the time with harris, like 30 (Terry) to 20 mins (Harris).

b) That's the toughest question. If Harris continues to improve his game he should be the better player. But I highly doubt, that in 3 years Devin Harris and Jason Terry are on the same team, especially the mavs. They should both be to good to coexistend on the the same position on the same team. Terry will be like the same player he is now, hopefully a little more consistent and Harris seems to me as a coachable player and the mavs have a perfect enviroment for young players to develope. Finally, my vote goes to Devin, who should surpass Terry over the next 2 years.

c) I don't consider Devin a true pass first point guard but he has the tools to be an All Star player some day. He is like a bigger version of NVE or a better Antonio Daniels. Flashy and fast with perfect size for the 1 guard spot. My prediction: In 4 years he could(hopefully will) be an All Star with 17-20/5/6-7.

d) The same question can be said for players like Damp or a (maybe) decreasing Finley? They both are question marks due to their attitudes(Damp) or due to their body(Fin). Right now I think the mavs have countervailed the losses of Nash, Najera, Walker, Jamison and NVE. It seems that they finally found together as a team and with a healthy Daniels and/or Howard they are very hard to beat. They should be considered serious conteders if they can beat some of the elite teams like they did the Heat last week. Their game is still too much depending on they offensive game. If they're don't shooing well they are loosing most of their games. This has to be fixed and they need someone who steps up to take some rebounds. this has to be howard. But I think with Terry in the lineup they could be special but only if guys like Stack, Dirk, Quis, Howard, Fin and most importat Damp are contributing.

So perfect for us....

a) How much longer do you think Jason Terry will be starting for
b) In 3 years, who will be better
c) How good will Devin Harris be
d) How far can we go with Jason Terry

a) I think he's got this year, and next year, and he'll either walk, or if Harris looks good enough, traded by the deadline next year.

b) I underrate Terry a lot, but I like Harris as a better player in 3 years. Mind you Harris was a college junior when he left, so we're not talking about some 19 HS project. Point Guards have a longer learning curve, so I think he'll just be entering the threshold between Starter and Star, wherever that is. He should give us a solid 14-5 and 5. I think he could do more, but I don't want to have unrealistic expectations.

c) I think when he's in his prime, he could be a poor-man's Stephon Marbury, but a Marbury who's less selfish. He has the capabilities to be a career 16 to 19 point scorer as a 2nd option to Dirk. He's a good scorer for a point guard, he just needs to work on his playmaking ability at this level, and that only comes with PT.

d) As far as Dirk takes him. He's not going to be a very assertive point guard, he's an ideal 3rd option who can hit you the open shot, and sometimes explode for some 25 point nights. What the Hawks had him doing, being basically a 1st option, it wasn't in his nature IMO. He's best as a roleplayer. We can get to the playoffs with him, and I think if Dirk is playing good its a matter of not making mistakes, and not being a selfish scorer for him.

Dirk is learning without Nash how to assert himself as the number one option, and I think a guy like Harris is perfect for him, if we want him to be a complete player. Harris is the prototypical PG who can score, but he looks to set up just as much if not more. I just don't know how he'll react to being more of a distributor than scorer in this offense. He's not going to be able to dominate the ball like he did at Winsconsin. But 2-3 years of grooming his role, and reining him in when he tries to do to much should help him get the picture. He seems like a smart enough player anyway, he's going to be a guy that does whatever he has to to win.

And Yeah, Bibby would be, but there's no way anything happens. Sorry.

You guys seem to be forgetting a pretty important fact. According to Hoopshype, Terry expires after next year. If this is the case, It seems to me he's the perfect holdover until Harris is ready in his 3rd year.
