Why do we hate Nelson all of a sudden?
I realize myself we play better under Johnson, but I think it's now almost trendy to just dog Nelson. Now he's not Phil Jackson, but he's been the coach during our rise to relevance in the NBA, and I really think we're disrespecting what he's helped us accomplished. It's easy (and fair) to point our how his small ball didn't work in the playoffs, but lately, noone appreciated that he got us to the playoffs in the first place.
I think since we've seen Johnson coach, we want Nelson out so we can be permanently molded in his identity. That's fair, but we're trying to kick him out of the door, and cursing at him on the way out. He, along with Nowitzki and Nash teaming with Finley put us on the map as perennial contenders. He's already said he's leaving after this contract, and I don't see him caving into demands for AJ to coach now. He's like the Chris Webber of the sidelines, he never won a title, but he helped us become more than a night off on the schedule. So instead of kicking him out into the cold, how about a fond farewell-type of exit for Nelson?

Yeah thats true. I agree...plus if it wasnt for Nelson there would be no Avery Johnson. I heard that they were very good friends and Avery learned almost everything from Nelson but Avery just has a different style of coaching and more defense into it.
Nelson has done a tremendous job for Dallas.
Good job Nellie, though we'll miss you next year. But you being the GM..you'll still be there.

Re: Why do we hate Nelson all of a sudden?
Because we, as fans, want the best for our team.
Yes, Don Nelson has helped us come from the laughing stock of the NBA to the perennial contenders. But thats basically it, the contenders. I really doubt that Don Nelson can lead us to a title, with his small ball lineups and his very strange matchups. Did you notice the other day that when Nelson got ejected, not only did AJ take over, but he got the Dallas Mavericks to claw back against the Sacramento Kings with some tenacious defense
The bottom line is, Avery Johnson stresses all the right things that a coach should. It's not so much that I hate Nelson, it's just I do prefer Avery by a bit

Re: Why do we hate Nelson all of a sudden?
Me personally, I've always been against Nellie and his coaching style. He's always had the players in the past but never knew how to put it together to win it all. A coach that doesn't stress defense doesn't win a title. I don't want to hear about how he hasn't been lucky. You must stress defense in order to win it all no matter how good your offense is.
I don't think there should be any pitty on Nellie. He's been treated like royalty by Mark Cuban. He's got a lot of money and there should be no reason not to DEMAND a championship. He's always the one tooting his own horn, and taking shots at people who question his philosophy. If he wants to be known as a great coach win a title enough said.

Re: Why do we hate Nelson all of a sudden?
I do feel that Nelson is being disrespected, but it could be that he is not the coach that can get us over the top. For instance, the Bulls won under Doug Collins, but didn't win Championships until Phil came along. The same with the Lakers.
No, I am not lobbying for Phil to come to Dallas, but it could be that Nelson's voice is starting to get old in the locker room.

Yeah I don't hate Nellie. I get frustrated with him sometimes. But i get frustrated with all my teams coaches from time to time. I just think that he took us as far he can. He has done a superb job with this franchise no doubt. But now I think he did all he can and has set the bar for somebody else to get us over that hump.

I just hope that Nellie has learned not to leave Queis on the bench in favor of VanHorn down the strech.

I dont really think Nellie is that bad of a coach, he just tries to be original with his line ups. Though, I think he's a terrible GM.

I think he is a great GM. Its just that Cuban has hurt his ability with some of the contracts he has signed. Example: maxing out Finley, Bradley's contract, and he almost hurt us with LaFrentz's contract.

So you don't think Nellie had anything to do with those contract's? Nellie has always backed Bradley. Don't just put it all on Cuban for the reason Nellie isn't able to perform his job. I don't think Cuban has anything to do with him spending his whole off season in Hawaii.

As I remember the story, Nelson wanted Bradley gone because he had been a disapointment and he had a bad attitude about not playing. During his contract year Shawn and Mark had a meeting and he told Cuban he would have a good year. He did have a good half-year and Mark gave him that big contract without Nelson's input.
I'm not putting it all on Mark. Lets also not forget about Donnie being in the front office. But it is hard to do things as a GM when your hand are tied with big contracts. I also think that Nellie and Mark's relationship is not that close. Looking at the fact that Mark first delayed his contract extention a year or two ago, and there has also been speculation each of the past couple of years of Nellie being replaced.
