From Staff Reports
The Mavericks are expected to sign 6-9 forward Josh Powell to a two-year contract when the new collective bargaining agreement is signed Thursday.
The first year of Powell's contract will be guaranteed. The second season will be at the Mavericks' option.
Powell, a North Carolina State product, would have been a senior last season. He left college early, and the Mavericks have had him in summer camp twice. Powell averaged 11.2 points and a league-leading 9.8 rebounds in the Vegas Summer League. In the Rocky Mountain Revue, Powell averaged 12.0 points and team-leading 6.3 rebounds.

Interesting. I know many Mavs fans on other boards raved about his performance the last couple weeks. What do you all think about this.

Nice. I don't know too much about his game, but he's only 23 years old right? Why not put him on the roster?

Re: Mavs expected to sign Josh Powell.
I think this one was a no brainer. You have a young athletic 6'9" guy who is a solid rebounder and can finish really well around the basket. He is a high energy guy and at 23 years old is a great addition to this team. I think that signals the end of Alan Henderson in a Mavs uniform. The team wanted to get more athletic and Powell is that type of player.
I mentioned early that Powell and maybe one other summer leaguer might make the team. I found it interesting that both Powell and Michael Harris did not play in the final Rocky Mountain Review summer league game. DNP coaches decision. I wonder if that was because the Mavs had already made thier decision about both guys. I would not be surprised to see another anouncement about signing Harris as well.

He's the same age as Julius Hodge. He's 22. He's basically a college senior.

Re: Mavs expected to sign Josh Powell.
Damn, I was just watching one of the Rocky Mountain Review games the Mavs played against the Hawks.
The other guy that I think the Mavs should sign from our summer league team is Rawle Marshall. He is silky smooth and cat quick.
Rawle Marshall
Small Forward | 6-7, 200 | Age: 23
Oakland (Detroit, MI)
Positives: An athletic swingman with long arms, excellent athleticism, quickness and leaping ability. Has a silky smooth jumper that extends beyond the NBA three. Very versatile. A good ball handler who should be able to play some point forward in the pros. Long arms make him a tough on the ball defender.
He was the Defensive Player of the Year in whatever league Oakland plays in. He is said to be only 187 lbs and does look thin but he does not look that thin. I think he could be an excellent defender and he has all the moves on offense. He shot the ball well in college but I don't know if you would consider him a great shooter but he can knock down a shot. He is also a terrific rebounder.
Here is something I found about him on Hoopsworld:
The Mavs got in to Salt Lake City from Las Vegas' summer league late the night before the game, and the coaches, Charlie Parker and Paul Mokeski, only made it in a couple hours before the game. Charlie was almost apologetic about the team, which only garnered 8 assists for the game. It's important to have point guards in these leagues, or else your wings or 2-guards are going to have to play out of their comfort zone. Dallas would love to have points Devin Harris and Marquis Daniels here, but they are dinged and not with the club in Utah. The Mavs added a couple of players for the Review portion of their summer. One of them, Rawle Marshall, overshadows the Mavs understandable problems in winning games here. Marshall was "the man" for Oakland University, the team that won the "play-in" game in the NCAA. Yesterday is the first time Parker got to even meet Marshall, who played for Memphis in the So-Cal pro league. But Parker got a good look at his new player, playing Rawle 31 of the game's 40 minutes. Rawle may be like the Mavs' draft pick this year. Mark Cuban called him right after the draft and asked him, "How'd you like to be the 61st pick in the draft?" It really lifted Rawle's mood after he went undrafted, despite some promises from some teams. Marshall is listed at 6-7; I talked to him and I believe it. He looks long on the court as well, because he is so thin, listed at 190. All these other players coming into the league...they want to be muscled up to the point of tightness. But how did Jordan do it? He came in lanky, then put on some muscle later. Rawle has the right idea, not that he doesn't lift already, because he has a wiry strength to him. And he has his quicks, a lot of quicks. And a lot of handle, with either hand, crossing over either direcion, behind the back, between the legs. He might be close to Lu Deng with such a good handle for such a young guy (Rawle is actually 23, very well spoken and in possession of a new Commumications degree from Oakland). Sitting with my colleague during the game, I kept saying, "Here he comes again." I was saying it every time Rawle touched the ball. Rawle was making so many real estate gaining moves out there, the people could have nick-named him Carlton Sheets. Marshall was born in Guyana, moved to NY when he was four, and to Detroit when he was 15. "I had the best of both worlds. Both New York and Detroit are basketball cities, and I kind of picked some things up in both places." He was sitting behind a couple of draft picks for Memphis at Long Beach; now he's excited to get major burn here with the Mavs, the team he really wants to sign with. "I would love to play for Dallas. They play my style of ball." Yes they do, and Rawle and Charlie both say he is a "defense first" guy; he had 5 steals yesterday. I see more than defense. Hear me now and believe me later...I see an NBA player in Rawle Marshall.

So maybe the Mavericks agree with me.
This was in this mornings Dallas Morning News:
Mavs mull free agent: The Mavericks may sign undrafted free agent Rawle Marshall, whom they consider a Josh Howard-type athlete.
The 6-7 swingman led underdog Oakland into the NCAA Tournament, averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds. He played well in the Utah and Long Beach summer leagues.

He shot the ball well in college and it looks like it is a done deal. The Mavs announced that they have signed Marshall. Terms are undisclosed.
