Should backup PG be offseason essential?
It seems that the Mavs are thinking about making Devin Harris their starting point guard this year. This could put Terry at sg, or 6th man, same for Stackhouse. Josh Howard at SF, Nowitzki at PF, and Dampier at C. This past year proved that Terry is not a true PG, but a scoring SG. If they decide to start Harris should the Mavs try to get a backup pg that could start and contribute all 82 games if needed?

Terry and Harris should be fine. Resign armstrong and we are cool. A much more pressing need is at the back-up 4/5 spot, which needs athleticism. Another more pressing need is another shooter.

Terry and Harris = One of the best PG Combo's available, we really don't need to upgrade that. They should be fine spilitting the minutes. I'd like to resign DA though, as a good gesture and because he's a good locker room guy and he can still contribute if needed.

Terry and Harris would do good combining minutes, but the Mavs do not need that. They need a solid point guard who can create for himself maybe 7 or 8 times a game, and for the rest of the game be a player who can pass and create for others. As much as we used Jason Terry at point guard he is a better shooting guard. Devin Harris will have a lot of pressure on his back to perform and who knows how he will handle it.
DA bring a lot of energy to the floor, and he played when needed last year.
This teams revolves around Dirk Nowitzki because he is one of the top 8 players in this league. This guy is our future to a Championship and we need someone who can create baskets for him all season. (playoffs)

Re: Should backup PG be offseason essential?
^ I somewhat agree, however considering Dirk put up career numbers (offensively) I don't think that the problem lies with getting him easy buckets. He did an inrecible job of creating for himself (remember early in the season when Dirk led the mavs in assists with about 2... yick) and somewhat others.
I think Jet can be our PG, neither Devin or Terry will ever be 'pure' PG's, but if it's one thing Jet can do it's score and I strongly beleive that he would be better at PG (unless running Daniels at PG or another Big PG), while he may be better on offense and the team may be able to spread the defense a little better. Think of the defensive problems it will create, Devin and Jet CANNOT play along side one another for long stretches of time...
Keep Jet here, Avery wants him as our PG and I have complete faith that he know's whats best for the team, better than anyone on this forum who says otherwise. The thing is, he's a great locker room guy, he kept us in a playoff series single handedly and he's a fan favourite. To me he seems worth keeping around.
DA can stay as well, once again great for chemistry and defense. He'll really get in there and contribute no matter how many minutes he gets, the perfect 3rd string PG.
As for Devin it's too early to give up on him, and too early to give him the starting role. Best to jkust bring him off the bench and let him develop

Re: Should backup PG be offseason essential?
Who is Jet ? Terry ? And why won't Devin start - he was # 5 pick last year. A lot of good players were picked after Devin, Mavs even traded up to get him, but he's shown little to this date. Play him / groom him - just make up your minds, Mavs. U let Nash go (lucky for Suns) 'cos Nelly said Devin was the next big thing since the Hoover Dam.
Peace, Mike

Re: Should backup PG be offseason essential?
I think we are fine with Devin and Terry at PG.Terry did good as our starting PG. I have to agree with soulhunter that Avery knows what he is doing and knows whats best for the team.
