Star-Telegram - One of the Mavericks' more popular players from a couple of years ago could be back with the team this fall.

According to league sources, the Mavs are trying to sign point guard Nick Van Exel, who was a vital part of the team's success when Dallas advanced to the 2003 Western Conference finals. Portland waived Van Exel on Wednesday, choosing not to retain him for the nonguaranteed money ($12.8 million) remaining on his contract for the upcoming season.

The Mavs also are discussing the possibility of signing potential free agent swingman Doug Christie, who might be released by Orlando through the league's new amnesty rule .

Mavs officials refused to comment on Van Exel, but a source said: "Obviously there's interest. We're looking for a backup third point guard, and he looks nice in a Mavs uniform.

"He's definitely a fit for what we're looking for. It's just a matter of him
making a decision."

Van Exel, who turns 34 on Nov. 27, has narrowed his choices to the Mavs, Houston, San Antonio and Miami.

How is Van Exel even a cancer? He's the one that lead this team into defeating Sacto a few years back, if it weren't for him they wouldn't have made it to the west. conf.

And it also said that NVE is a great locker room guy for the mavs and a very has a very good relationship with AJ.

I'm tired of hearing the term "cancer" being used to describe guys. That's just a cheap way to analyze a player.

Devin Harris will be completely buried on the bench though if NVE is brought in, further slowing down his progress.

Thats what I dont want to happen. Harris is progressing slow enough already, he needs to keep the minutes that he is getting.

If Harris wants PT he should earn it not get it. NVE is damn near 40, Harris should be able to hold his own against a trigger happy over the hill 6' two guard in a point guard's body and get plenty of minutes.

IMO if NVE comes here. I don't think that will slow down Harris from developing for some reason. Maybe somebody can enlighten me on that.

However I DONT Want Christie whatsoever. He is declining and he is getting older.

Between the two I would rather have Christie. At least he attempts to play defense and he does some other things like rebound and pass. NVE is good for only one thing and that is shooting which he does not do very well anymore.

The best way to develop would be to play though, right? There's no guarantee NVE would take all of Harris' minutes, but you'd have to figure that if the Mavs were going to go out and get him they would play him whatever minutes Terry doesn't play.
