Mavs sign Rawle Marshall

I am happy about this. I suggested we do this a couple of weeks ago. Now it looks like it is a done deal.

Mavericks sign swingman

Donnie Nelson likes what he sees in 6-7 rookie free agent

01:32 AM CDT on Saturday, August 6, 2005

By CHUCK CARLTON / The Dallas Morning News

The Mavericks added a swingman Friday who brings length and athleticism.

No, it's not Doug Christie, who should be waived soon by the Orlando Magic.

Instead, the Mavericks signed rookie free agent Rawle Marshall. They say he can contribute like late first-round pick Josh Howard or undrafted free agent Marquis Daniels. The 6-7 Marshall has a 7-foot-3 wingspan and was the valedictorian of his high school class. The first year of the contract is partially guaranteed with the second year at the team's option.

"There's a lot of things to like about Rawle Marshall," said Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks president of basketball operations. "He didn't play for a big-time school and flew under the radar."

Marshall averaged 19.7 points and 7.7 rebounds last season for Oakland (Mich.) University. He recorded 16 points and five rebounds in a first-round NCAA tournament loss to eventual champion North Carolina.

The Mavericks had talked with veteran swingman Wesley Person. But the signing of Marshall and depth at small forward makes Person an unlikely option.

Christie remains a possibility. He has told friends he would like to play in Dallas, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The Sentinel reported Thursday that he would be waived under the NBA's new luxury tax amnesty clause. He could replace Michael Finley, who is expected to be waived or traded before Aug. 15. Christie's agent, Bradley Marshall, did not immediately return calls Friday.

mavs also are after doug christie too. the league is in trouble
