Questions about the new season

well i missed a lot of crap with the Mavs.

Anyways i was seein if anybody could tell me how Diop is playin or how he looks. Is there any young players stepping up in pre-season like daniels, howard, and harris did.

But im pumped we got Christie, ive wanted him for the last 5 years.

Terry/Harris/Armstrong
Stack/Christie/Strickland
Howard/Daniels/Van Horn
Dirk/Van Horn
Damp/Diop/Bradley

Thn if any young guys step up. That's some pretty good depth and i think a good mix of players. All of them are VERY capable of playing great defense and the two who aren't consistent on defense,(Dirk andVan Horn) can both rebound pretty damn good and are both versatile on offense.

I do wish somehow we could have kept alan henderson. or could land pj brown or some other defensive PF/C

Diop looks like a steal right now. I don't know if it will last but the 30-40 lbs he lost has made a huge difference. The last two preseason games against two decent teams (Mil and Det) he has averaged:

27.5 mpg 9.5 rpg 4 bpg 2 spg and 3 ppg.

Now not everything is perfect because he is 3-12 from the floor during those games but that included 1-8 against Mil. But those are as good a numbers as we could hope for. I am no longer disappointed about not getting Steven Hunter because he would have been much more expensive and I am not sure that Diop won't be everything that Hunter is and more.

Christie does look like a nice fit for this team as well. He looks to be healthy again and he is playing well.

The brightest star of the preseason would have to be Marquis. He was the best Maverick player in the preseason. He looks like he looked for the last 3rd of his rookie season. The guy puts up numbers in every statistical category. He does a little of everything. He is very impressive so far.

mavsman, weren't you in favor of signing Steven Hunter to a big deal, or was that someone else? Mayb eI got you confused with someone else, because you're exactly right about Diop/Hunter. There isn't going to be such a huge difference in production to make up for the difference in money between the two. That's what I was saying back when the Mavs were rumored to go after Hunter, that you could get a player who will do the same things for cheaper.

Re: Questions about the new season

Mavsman is right on the money about Diop and Marquis.

Your depth chart is a little off. To clarify...

The normal rotation will probably be:
Terry/Harris/Marquis/Armstrong
Christie/Stack/Marquis
Howard/Van Horn/Stack/Nowitzki/Marquis
Dirk/Van Horn/Powell
Damp/Diop/Mbenga

I think you'll see Avery flirt with Marquis at point guard for short stretches. And you will see Nowitzki and Van Horn on the court together sometimes while still having a legit center out there.

Side note personal opinion time: Marquis has all the tools to be what Doug Christie was in his prime only even better. Christie is the *perfect* guy to be mentoring him right now. Doug's true value to this team will never show up in his stat line.

If Diop continues to show the hustle and energy he has so far don't be surprised to see people calling for him to start over Dampier before the season's over. I can smell it already. But it's only preseason so we'll see what happens.

I've been impressed with Josh Powell. I'd much rather have him and work on building him than have Alan Henderson sitting on the end of the bench.

Bradley is retired, TAW is finally waived, and Rawle Marshall and P-Pod will likely be on the D-League team. MBenga will get garbage minutes only this year.

Re: Questions about the new season

well then, I'm pretty pumped. The only thing burning question is whether we're gonna keep keith van horn through out the season or if somehow we're gettin paul peirce. but i like our team now and look like it has the talent, depth and hopefully chemistry to win the title.

and hopefully what yall said about diop is true, because Dampier seems to play a little better with some competition, haha maybe we'll see him actually hustle.

Re: Questions about the new season

I think we'll be keeping KVH unless we can get someone else who can produce points and backup Dirk

You are correct, I was in favor of signing Hunter for up to 4 mil. Had we done that we would not have had money to sign Christie so I guess I was wrong. Of course I did not think there was anyone else available at that time that would be able to fill in our backup Center postion.

Did you have any idea that Diop would lose all that weight and that it would turn him into a completely different player? What were the players you were suggesting back when we were trying to get Hunter? I can't remember the list of available Centers but I don't think I liked anyone on the list.

If you listen to Cavs fans, Diop is the worst basketball player to ever step onto a basketball. However, fortunately the Mavs do not have the same Diop that the Cavs had.

Anyway, I am really happy with the team as it is.
