Actually, Mavs are division's defending champs
You have to question the defensive commitment of this team right now. It makes you wonder if they have what it takes to win the division.
And no, we're not talking about Dallas.
We're talking about San Antonio.
Can you imagine holding that discussion two years ago?
Can you imagine broaching the subject at this time last season?
As the Mavericks and Spurs head toward their third meeting of the season Friday night, the best rivalry in the NBA has undergone a fascinating twist. The Mavericks have held 10 straight opponents to less than 100 points. The last three failed to crack 90.
And these weren't mediocre offenses. The Mavericks held the league's highest scoring team, the Phoenix Suns, to 99 points. That's 11 below their average. Three nights later, a Denver team that was averaging more than 106 points was held to 85 points by the Mavericks.
And San Antonio? The Spurs allowed 97 points to a Houston team that's didn't have Tracy McGrady. Milwaukee ran up 114 points against the Spurs, the most points the team has given up at home in the last five years. Earlier this week, the Spurs gave up 38 points in the fourth quarter in a loss to Cleveland.
The same night, the Mavericks gave up just 33 points to Seattle in the entire second half.
This is why San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich has blasted his team for its casual approach to defense and calls this his worst defensive team in the last seven to eight years.
You can argue this is an overreaction based on a tiny portion of the schedule. The Spurs have still allowed fewer points this season than Dallas. But the Mavericks are closing ground.
Fast.

Interesting what the Spurs are going through; it's awfully early though.

Knee-jerking over-reaction if you ask me.
The media in San Antonio don't have Cowboys' collapse to focus on, so they start bugging the only professional team they have.
Come on! It's only 2 losses! Dallas went through an 8 game losing streak for crying out loud.

I agree! The old school ballers would dust themselves off and continue!
By "old school," I meant something like this...
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AJz6Op1cBTQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AJz6Op1cBTQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

They are still the Spurs, nothing to worry about as a fan although they have not been great recently.

Well, they've had their share of injuries and illnesses.
We have injuries on our team too, except we don't notice Stackhouse's absence because we are deeeeeeeep.

I like to get a bearing on the Spurs when their "Rodeo" trip comes along. They look like they're struggling now, but even a dead snake has venom.
