Nowitzki knows pain felt by Romo

Dallas Mavericks' Nowitzki knows pain felt by Romo

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News

If Dirk Nowitzki could impart one piece of advice to Tony Romo, he would tell the Cowboys' quarterback to get over it.

Dwelling on the negative for too long can be unhealthy for anybody, Nowitzki said Wednesday. He and the Mavericks went through it last spring when they were upset in the first round of the playoffs. A week later, Nowitzki collected the MVP trophy in an uncomfortable ceremony.

"Everybody deals with stuff differently," Nowitzki said. "I just had to get away [to Australia] and get my mind away from basketball.

"I'm sure he's going through some tough times. But at some point, you got to get over it and look forward. He's still young and has a great career ahead of him. You can't just always look at the negative."

The Mavericks found out Wednesday how the Cowboys' season can impact them. They were greeted on a light practice day by probably the biggest media throng of the season for any practice.

"I've been here 10 years, and everybody lives and dies with the Cowboys," Nowitzki said. "It was bad for the city, but things happen. We experienced it last year in the first round."

Jerry Stackhouse said it's now the Mavericks' turn under the microscope.

"We know that the Cowboys are out of the picture now and probably a little more attention will shift to us and the Stars," he said. "We were enjoying floating under the radar for a little bit, but I guess that's over now."

Stackhouse, by the way, said his right hamstring and knee both were improved and he hopes to return from a one-game absence Saturday against Seattle.

A bit surprising: Though it may be only temporary with Andrew Bynum's injury, the Los Angeles Lakers were the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference going into Wednesday's games.

"I didn't know that," said Eddie Jones, a former Laker. "The season is still early. But they got a great team. When you got Kobe Bryant on your team, you got a shot. In my opinion, [he's] probably the best closer in the game. And probably the best player, to me, in the game right now.

"But it's just mid-January."

No place like Boise: At least, not this week. The D-League Showcase is ongoing in Idaho, and several members of the Mavericks' staff are attending, including assistant GM Keith Grand and director of scouting Amadou Gallo Fall.

Every team in the Development League is playing at Boise.

Nick Fazekas, by the way, is having a solid season with Tulsa, averaging 18 points and nine rebounds.

Briefly: Avery Johnson and Paul Westphal were absent from Wednesday's workout, which was conducted in separate sessions for high- and low-minute players. The workouts were conducted by assistants Joe Prunty and Mario Elie. Most of the time was spent in the weight room and in shooting drills. Also of import was allowing nagging injuries to heal. ... Josh Howard is teaming with Feed the Children to provide 400 Dallas-area families with boxes of food and personal-care items. He will distribute the items today in 25-pound boxes to each family.
