What was Avery thinking ?
Quote:
1. Kidd has never been a shooter. You can't trade for Jason Kidd to be your ace closer and then worry about his shooting. Kidd actually said earlier this week that Dirk has been "helping me with my shot," but it's not going to improve fast enough to prevent this from being an issue in every playoff game Dallas plays. The solution? You trust Kidd's resume a closer, put him in pick-and-roll situations with Nowitzki at game's end and thus give your trade maximum opportunity for success as it was conceived.
2. Johnson himself has likened the Mavs' final 20-odd games to a learning-on-the-fly training camp. So why would you delete Kidd from the exact situation that you, as head coach, described as his specialty just days earlier?
3. When the Mavs came up with offensive rebounds after two Nowitzki misses in that final half-minute, they ended up with a busted play to decide things. But instead of a Kidd/Nowitzki pick-and-roll for the Mavs to force overtime or win it, their combo was Jason Terry and Nowitzki. You saw the result.
|
Point 2 is what makes me really mad about it, you have a golden opportunity to prepare for such a situation in the playoffs and Kidd is not in the game ? What the heck.

The crazy thing is while Kidd isn't a great shooter he is one of the greatest clutch shooters ever!

Re: What was Avery thinking ?
Well, it’s obvious Avery was more comfortable letting players more familiar with the system close the game – but it wasn’t the final minute that lost the game in my mind – it will be more the flow and tempo that this team needs to play if it hopes to get past San Antonio.
(Ironically, Harris had much to do with Dallas beating them in ’06 playing that style. No one can argue that the team bogged down into an isolation offense, thus the trade.)
Let it be known that I agree with Sefcothat yes, this trade may not work – but something had to be done.
And I'm glad they pulled the trigger, I was too bored to watch.

Re: What was Avery thinking ?
the question is still, with the game on the line why weren't your best players on the court? this is one of those situations where shooting and defensive performances don't matter. 30 seconds left down by 2 is when you just let your best player play basketball. This is the same BS line up crap that got us ran outta GS. At its base level basketball is a very simple sport. Like I said years ago. Avery aint a great coach but when you were handed a team like the Mavs you are gonna have a great coaching record. I think I need to go re watch the heat series and pay more attention to what Avery was doing.

Kidd has never hit a game winner in his life, but he has all sorts of clutch misses.

Take meds before you do - it's not pretty. Wade vs. Harris, one on one.

Re: What was Avery thinking ?
Didn't Wade come out of the closet in the Miami series?
That sure was one hell of a coming-out party though....

Re: What was Avery thinking ?
I see no problem with Stack replacing Kidd in that final play......
Kidd would be good in the situation if we actually had a play for him. I think there simply wasn't one.... YET!

No, he played like an MVP the entire season and if it wasn't for his struggles in the first round series with the Bulls he might have had one of the best stretches of individual perfomances in the playoffs ever. I think he shot like 60 percent against the Nets and Pistons and just continued to play spectacular in the Finals. It was like Baron Davis 2k7 ... on drugs.

Re: What was Avery thinking ?
All the more reason not to play him straight man-to-man. Who else was hurting us?
If Avery doesn't show us something along the lines of strategic coaching, his resume is going to suck. | |
