He's just being asked to play like one from here on.

It's a lot to expect from the 22-year-old Beaubois, who still has that carefree air about him. It is that laid-back attitude that must change if he is going to fulfill the wild hopes and dreams that the Dallas Mavericks and their fans have for him.

"For sure, they're waiting on big things for me," Beaubois said. "And the thing right now is just trying to win the game. It's different now. I'm just trying to run the show and make plays that help my teammates."

To do that, Beaubois has to start paying attention to details. And he must have a shorter memory. Friday's 88-70 loss to Denver in the opener of the NBA Summer League was a perfect example.

Beaubois missed 13 of his 16 shots, including all nine from 3-point range. And that wasn't the worst of it.

If the Mavericks want Beaubois to play point guard, he cannot let poor shooting impact the rest of his game. Jason Kidd has bad shooting nights, too. But he doesn't let shooting problems bleed over into other parts of his game.

Beaubois had six turnovers and just one assist in the opener. And remember, this was against Denver's Ty Lawson, not Chauncey Billups.

There were issues defensively, too, which chapped the coaching staff more than the missed shots.

The Mavericks have worked all summer with Beaubois on leadership, on holding the team together and keeping his poise even if things don't go well when it comes to shooting the ball.

"Sometimes, guys get down when they're missing shots. But he's got to pick things up this year after having a year under his belt, whether he's making shots or not," said Monte Mathis, the Mavs' summer-league coach. "He's got to be a leader on the court, guard people and being a guy who's helping his teammates no matter what."

he's really our best source of dribble penetration. more than anything, he has to be able to drive and either finish or kick out to the open man. to me, it's not as much about any statistic as it is about giving the mavericks the dimension they don't have.

Based on your description, I believe Jeremy Lin would be the better fit.

yeah, everyone is talking about this Lin guy now. i suppose Lin is more likely to make the smart basketball play once he gets into the hole, whereas roddy would probably just take it himself regardless. Lin probably won't be on the active roster this year, so the mavericks are still gonna need roddy to improve his decision-making.

yeah but i mean our guard rotation is pretty stocked w/ kidd, roddy, terry, barea, nique so i'm just glad he didn't go to the lakers cuz i hate those guys.
