For camera gurus...

As many of you know, I bought my wife a Canon Digital Rebel XTi sometime mid last year, and she's been loving it.

We have only been using the "stock" lens that came with it. With her b-day coming up, I am thinking about getting a new lens. I know the professional grade ones could cost an arm and a leg, and I am no where prepared to spend that kind of money.

What should I look for when shopping for a "budget" lens? I am thinking somewhere around 200-300ish.

Zooming is important since we take it to the mavs games... we only have upper level seats.

I saw this one on Circuit City website:

Is this a good beginner lens? Any help is appreciated.

Buy all your photography equipment from me ed! I can sell you the 75-300 for an even $100. Cannon sent us 25 of them to put together with kits.

It's not a horrible lens. I have the much older version of it. For sport's photography though you'll need something MUCH faster. That will cost usually 600+. Photography isn't a cheap profession/hobby :-\

EDIT: If she's only going to use it for Mavs games, I would check out the 100-300mm 1:4.5-5.6

The 4.5-5.6 is the size of the opening on the aperture. It determines how much light is passed through the lens onto the sensor/film. Simply, the lower the number's the faster it is

So... the one on circuit city is "f/4-5.6," meaning it's even lower than the 4.5-5.6?
