Boykins Shines in opener / Nene options
After Denver's intial run the team basically stopped scoring. I was really surprised by the drought. Regardless Boykins did his job, scoring and PASSING. He has proved he belongs in the NBA. Now he is learning to do what the nuggets need. He pushes the ball and he dropped five dimes in just over 20 minutes of playing time. I only saw a shot or two i wished he'd have kept in the cannon. Id like to see his FG percentage be between .460 and .490 this season and for him to average those 5 assists per game. If he can continue to do that, he will continue to prove that we cant afford to lose him off the bench.
Nene on the other hand got injured again. Surpisingly we got great play out of Najera, and I mean great. Not good, but better than good. And Elson is capable for spuirts as well. Now doctors have to figure out Nene's medical situation. Say Nene was back to full strength in december, and denver is at the top or near the top of the western conference. What would it take for you to trade him. Would Raja Bell and those draft picks (they are going to be high) from Atlanta (phoenix's) be enough to trade for Nene, or are you all still waiting for Paul Pierce or another superstar to acquire in the deal.
Let me tell you this about Raja Bell. He isnt a household name, but I still think he is what we need. They guy is stellar on defense and has expanded his offensive game. He looked great last night. The draft picks could turn into Greg Oden and OJ Mayo, or other talented players. Najera looks great as a reserve. Do you dare pull the trigger?
Carmelo showed he has taken his game to the next level. He is without a doubt an all star this season. If he can shoot closer to .500 from the field, score 23 to 25 points per game average 7 or 8 rebounds 4 assists half a block and a steal per game, then he enters the elite level this year. And without Shaq or another "star" on the team to be able to do that, makes him a very good player. That crossover move to the basket and flip layup was insane. Beautiful post and dribble drive game. Especially on the wings that try to guard him he needs to really fight for position and then do the ole jordan turn and shoot on them.

Great post I completely agree with everything you said. That crossover Melo did on Bowen was amazing, it was so fast and then he was at the rim in a flash. Carmelo has no fear taking the ball to the bucket. Carmelo right now is our best post player IMO. However I think Kenyon can be just as effective in the post when he gets his game rolling. Carmelo was brilliant though he kept us in that game during the 4th quarter.
As for Boykins well I have always loved his game and supported him. Boykins is incredible back up pg to come off the bench. The guy is instant offense and has one of the best shooting strokes in the league.
The situation with Nene could be very serious. Keep in mind if the injury is serious that will hurt Nene's trade value. I mean did you see that play ? Nene forced the contact and then his knee buckled, but it didnt look that bad so I'm hoping its not a serious injury. However I want to keep Nene right now. I don't want to trade him, but it looks like we will at some point.
Dont forget Lenard and Miller they provided a lot of offense early for us, but dissapeared in the 2nd half, The Spurs really locked down on us, I was hoping the Nuggets could pull out the small upset and get the W.

yea i think we were like 0 for 7 from the three point line though. That led to Melo double teams which he did make a few poor decisions and picked up some offensive fouls, the only negative comment I have. Which i attribute to poor three point shooting. Harder to double team if he can pass out to shooters.
As for Nene Im starting to put my personal opinion aside. He just got hurt again. But so far this year he hasnt earned a starting role, and he will be commanding 10 million next off season. I cant see our owner spending that. Raja Bell can hit the outside shot and is a great defender. I thought he would have been a great fit. he is just plain better than Johnson. He is a better defender than buckner, and provides outside shooting. We needed to knock down a few threes yesterday. He could have been the guy. On December 15th if Nene was mended denver could work something out for Bell and the atlanta picks. Id prefer this over sending out Nene and Andre Miller in a trade for Paul Pierce. I think Bell would mesh better and with acquiring those high draft picks Id still be statisfied that Kiki and Stan are looking beyond the current roster at building a young core that can eventually replace guys like Marcus Camby in the lineup as they age. This is something the Spurs have done. They sure dont miss David Robinson for example.
Anyone interested in say, Daniel Gibson, Sergio Rodriguez,Ronnie Brewer, Rodney Carney,Rajon Rondo,Greg Oden, Brendan Wright,Alexis Ajinca,OJ Mayo, etc etc??
Id feel confident with those picks we could land a few major prospects high in the draft.

Re: Boykins Shines in opener
I really don't know what Denver will do with Nene.
He didn't look overly improved before he went down. He took a bad jumper that missed and he dribbled right into trouble under the hoop and tried to get a call. He was in horrible position and had nowhere to go with the ball so on the play he was injured on he didn't get the call b/c he wasn't doing anything but looking for a call.
Denver can't afford to give a guy that can't crack the starting lineup anywhere near 10 million. I'd say right now I wouldn't give Nene anything but a 6 year 36 million deal, but he can do much better than that on the open market.
Anthony and Martin lobbied for no major changed in the lineup this offseason. I don't think that Denver will trade for Raja Bell because he and Melo basically hate each other on the court. Melo is calling the shots here, lets be real. It's his team...he is our franchise guy that we must also ink here pretty quick. We can't upset him. That's really ridiculous too because Bell is a great player and yes he would fit in great.
Bell is what Denver wishes Buckner could be.
Nene must go. He is gone after the year. Denver now must work to find a deal for him that doesn't show too much desperation on their part to get value back for a guy who is all but certain not to resign.
I'm not quite sure Boykins shined last night. His shooting lets everyone else become stagnant. Pass the ball little fella.

he did, i felt he actually played the role we needed. Carmelo cant play every minute, and Charles Barkley would tell you Andre Miller actually prevents our team from being a run and gun team. Im not going to go there, however Boykins should get credit were credit is due. Id say on the whole his shot selection was good. He missed one inside that was a good shot, and took one or two i wish he didnt, but he also made some good passes, pushed the ball, got the spurs on there heels defensively. good stuff which is why i advocate he is a great 6th man and will be in the running this year for sure.
As for Raja Bell I'm not convinced Melo wouldnt get along with him if a trade was made. Melo is great and all but we all know he isnt going to turn down a max deal so he can take a one year tender and possibly get injured. thats just crazy Amare made sure he got his deal inked before any injury talk started. So I contend Stan and Karl (not kiki, hilariously enough) are running this team. All they would have to do is sit down and suggest Bell might be a better role player than a "star" that will come in and take touches away from him (melo).
So yea Im saying Stan and Karl run the team not melo. Melo is going to be locked up through his rookie deal and then for another five years after that. I think before Karl came in Melo ran the team, however I dont think we liked our record at that time. I think Melo knows to be successful in this league he is going to have to take directions from Karl and play within the system. No isolations and catch hold and shooting fadaways

Re: Boykins Shines in opener
Boykins shined? He was 1-5 in the second half, and was a big reason we lost a grip on that game. He hogged the ball and took stupid shots - just like last year. I thought his performance was gut-wrenching; when he makes more shots, he gains more confidence, which is a bad thing.
I'm going to try to start the season off on a positive note, but there weren't many positives to be taken from the game last night, save Carmelo and Najera. The half court offense is horrendous, I mean, it has gotta be among the worst five in the league.
Anyway, let's hope for the best tonight.

we played the spurs. i tried to tell people what we needed to do rosterwise to compete with them. those things werent done. if boykins didnt come in and make some shots to begin with we might have lost control of the game a lot earlier. He shoots a decent percentage from the field, drops 5 dishes in limited minutes, speeds up the game, probably took one or two bad shots the entire night, and he still gives a gut wrentching performance. maybe you are just negative towards Boykins, funny how he keeps us in games though.
Lets not blame our lack of rebounding, lack of outside shooting, lack of perimeter defense especially with Vo. The guards of the spurs started penetrating and then we got down by ten towards at end and carmelo kept us in the game. Boykins Najera and Melo all had a good game. The Spurs are just loaded. You seem to miss my point. The knock on boykins is he is all shooting and no passing. Everyone (Moe and Karl) want him to distribute more, and he did that. Thats not negative man, thats positive. We just dont have what we need at the shooting guard, and quite frankily the Spurs are the best team in the league right now.

Agreed. That said, had he not missed all those shots in the third quarter, we may not have lost control of the game in the second half. He really hurt our offense.

He doesn't shoot a decent percentage from the field. On top of that, he is very streaky. I thought he did a decent job setting up others, when he actually passed. He does speed up the game, but when he doesn't involve others when the game is sped up, the purpose is lost. On or two bad shots the entire night? Please, he ****ed up the entire third quarter, taking stupid *** shots.

Why the hell would I be negative towards Boykins? I was ecstatic when we signed him and have based my opinions entirely on his play. And he doesn't keep us in games - he takes us out of them.

Did I place the blame solely on Boykins? No, I said he was one of the main reasons we lost. Obviously, I agree with you about those other factors.

Hey, people can keep justifying Boykins' play, but he really hurt the team many times last year. If he played more under control, he'd be great to have, but he's a selfish player and doesn't wanna play within the system.

read the title of the thread, all of my comments on his performance are from that game. The opener. he shoot decent from the field that day. And was unselfish in his passing. Your thinking of last year when you made your remarks on Boykins play.
