DerMarr Johnson eyeing maximum minutes
An interesting article from the Rocky Mountain News regarding Earl Watsons pay day and DerMarr playing for the minimum. The article highlights how DerMarr is now a starter while Earl Watson rides the pine, and it doesn't seem that will be changing any time soon. DJ talks about wanting to play for his contract, soon his pay day could be coming as well. Should be interesting to see if the Nuggets are going to pay DerMarr good money if he makes a big impact this season on the Nuggets.
Quote:
DALLAS - Same agent, two very different contracts. Same coach, two very different distribution of minutes.
In September, point guard Earl Watson and shooting guard DerMarr Johnson were unrestricted free agents represented by Dan Fegan. Watson, after averaging 7.7 points as a reserve for the Memphis Grizzlies, signed a five-year, $29 million contract with the Denver Nuggets. Johnson, after averaging 7.1 points as a part-time starter for the Nuggets, got a one-year minimum deal worth $835,810 to re-sign with the Nuggets.
Look what has happened since. Watson has not left the bench in six of seven games, playing only 6 minutes, while Johnson once again has moved into the starting lineup.
"Earl got that deal offered from other teams," Johnson said. "He got nice deals coming right out of the gate. . . . It's easier for a point guard or a center to get paid and not have big stats.
"It didn't frustrate me at all (getting the minimum) because I could have gotten paid more than the minimum, but I would have had to sign for a longer time, and that's not what I wanted to do. I'm confident that I can play myself into a big deal."
