Van Gundy out Riley In
Heat coach Van Gundy resigns
Quote:
Van Gundy said he resigned voluntarily.
"I made this decision for one reason and one reason only: I love my family," Van Gundy said. He said that because of travel, games and practices, he would have seen his children at home only 49 days out of 170 this season.

Re: Van Gundy out Riley In
Ahh, I think almost everyone knew that Riley would end up coaching this team eventually, one way or another. Can't really say that I'm shocked.

You hit the nail on the head. When the news came it didnt suprise me. What suprised me is the reasoning of Riley becoming the Head Coach again. The fact Van Gundy is stepping down on his own is the suprise to me.

Re: Van Gundy out Riley In
somebody should ask Van Gundy, if it was the first year he had this "travel" problem. I mean being a head and assistant coach in the nba for so long, i can't believe this.

True you wonder if Van Gundy just said this as a PR thing for the Heat.

I think you might be on to something here.
But Riley said Van Gundy was the man for the job, remember?
"If I'm getting forced out, I would have gotten absolutely every dollar on my contract and walked out the door," Van Gundy said. "That's not what happened here. ... Anybody who's speculating otherwise has to do so in total disregard of the facts of the situation."
Whole article can be found here.
Is it possible that this isn't just Riley wanting to coach again without catching heat (no pun intended) about taking over a job he said was secure?

Re: Van Gundy out Riley In
It really will be a treat though seeing Riley back out there manning the courtside. He is really going to be putting his reputation on the line as a great NBA coach. If he takes the Heat all the way people will be singing his praises for a long time to come.

Re: Van Gundy out Riley In
Nuggets coach Karl and Bobcats coach Bickerstaff weigh in on Riley.
Quote:
|
Karl and Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff weighed in on Pat Riley returning as Miami Heat coach, replacing Stan Van Gundy. "I really feel bad for Stan," Karl said. "I think he's done a (great) job. . . . Pat Riley is a great coach. The organization has the luxury to be able to slot (in) a very talented coach." Said Bickerstaff: "I guess (Riley's) got the fever and he's got a pretty . . . good team to come back to."
