Expanding the NBA draft

It would make sense if the NBA made their draft 3 rounds deep.

Think about it...with all of the overseas phenoms getting drafted, you get guys who played excellent college ball going without being drafted. If they expanded the draft, it would give these great players a better shot at the pro level.

An alternate thing they coudl do is hold an international draft, then the regular draft, but I'm against that. I say expand!

Re: Expanding the NBA draft

I wouldn't mind seeing the NBA draft go 3 rounds. Didn't the NBA draft use to have more rounds?

Re: Expanding the NBA draft

If I could create the draft I would actually have three different rounds.

Round 1A, includes all players age 19 and up coming from college basketball.

Round 1B, includes all players age 19 and up that have no college basketball experience (overseas players)

Round 2 Would be all remaining players age 19 and up (due to the collective bargaining agreement) however Id lower this to 18 if I could personally.

What that means is. First college players would get drafted. The lotto would be the same. The order would be the same as it is now. However there would be two lottos because there are two first round drafts. Meaning different teams could have the first pick in draft 1a and 1b.

One B is done by the same lotto and order as listed above. Since some players might not come over this draft should be done seperately. Also draft 1A should be done at the normal pay scale. Also in draft 1A each team has a good idea about the player they are getting. Much more so than 1B. So in 1B the payscale for draftees should be reduced to 90% of what a 1A draftee would make. Meaning if at one draft slot in 1A a player makes 1.5 million, then the same slot in draft 1B should make 1.35 million

The terms of the contract (in years and bird rights) should stay the same.

Now with The 2nd round draft. This should reward teams by first how far they got in the playoffs, and then (to break ties) how many games they won. (if both teams won the same amount of games and went the same distance in the playoffs then you look to their individual series. If that series was tied then you take the team that won the last game. Same goes for teams that didnt make the playoffs. You are basically rewarding the team that won the nba championship last year with the first pick in that draft. And the team that lost the most games, gets the last pick.

This is a big change. There are two pay scales. First if you dont want their bird rights. Sign them to a guaranteed two year deal for the league min. If they are placed in the NBDL, they wont be counted as part of the 15 (like they would be today) roster spots. These 2nd rounders would be paid by their teams, but not on the roster until they are called up.

Now if the team wants their bird rights. they have to give them a guaranteed 3 yr deal worth 750 thousand a year. then after 3 years they become a restricted free agent. However if you do this they immediately count as one of the 15 even if they are in the nbdl.

those are my thoughts. i'm sure you will all question the eurpoean thing, but this is the United States and I feel that it would be best for improving basketball in the NBA and college here.

Re: Expanding the NBA draft

The talent pool doesn't seem large enough to warrant expanding the draft. Besides, teams that want to utilize the draft more always trade with teams for additional picks.

yes and no, some good players enter the league undrafted.

with my system if you dont want to utlize the third draft pick. just forgo the pick or put the 3rd pick in the nbdl and pay the min.

Re: Expanding the NBA draft

The NBA draft used to be 12 rounds back in the early 80's. However, it has obvioulsy diminished in size. I knew a guy once who was drafted by the Suns in the 70's. He played at UCLA with Walton until a freshman by the name of Marques Johnson took his starting spot.

Anywho, I believe the talent IS there for 3 rounds...especially since the overseas talent is coming on in.

It'd be cool to do what hockey does, and be able to draft players whil estill in college, but let them continue to play at their schools until they are ready to join the big boys.
