Karl's Confidence Rewarded On Road
Quote:
NEW ORLEANS — At the Nuggets' shootaround Wednesday morning, George Karl slumped in a chair like a 15th-round boxer. The guy had taken hits of late: the loss at Phoenix and the loss of Nene to suspension. But the coach calmly sipped his beverage, peered at the court and said: "We can win this game. I'm very confident that if we do some things the right way, we can win the game."
Karl had a plan and, yep, the Nuggets won the game 101-88, defeating a tough New Orleans team by playing tactical and tenacious defense, rattling the best point guard in the NBA.
"To be honest with you, this might be the biggest win for us this year," said Denver forward Carmelo Anthony, who scored a game-high 29 points. "We've won some big games on the road in Boston and Orlando, but this is the biggest. We're close at the fourth and fifth spot. It was a battle. It was a playoff game tonight."
It also was a battle for the playoffs. The Nuggets entered the game fourth in the tight Western Conference, just percentage points ahead of the Hornets.
The Nuggets (46-26) remained in fourth place in the West and finished the season series tied with the Hornets (44-26), so their tiebreaker now would be determined by conference record. And that tiebreaker would determine whether Denver has home-court advantage in a potential playoff series with New Orleans.
