Altitude
The Nuggets won their last two home games really impressively. Before the season noone would have thought that Denver could beat Phoenix by 30 points, and that there is a realistic chance for beating the Mavericks. I really wonder whether those victories have been influenced by the altitude of Denver. Is this factor really a big advantage for the Nuggets or is it just a cheap excuse for the teams that lose at Denver ?

last year when the nuggets sucked badly they played a different style of game... the slowed the game down and let opponents get their breath back... this year they are running teams into the ground. they run run run... wheather or not u guys want to believe it the altitude is a big factor. i have played in colorado my entire life. i went to play in a tourney down in miami and was fine then i played in a tourney in denver with a lot of out of state 5 star athletes and they got tired quick... i kept running with little trouble while at the end of the games their hand were on there knees.

Here is a good article about the altitude factor. According to it:
Quote:
|
The team historically has had the biggest discrepancy between home and road records of any team in the four major pro sports.
|
Another thing about the altitude:
Quote:
|
"We always thought it was mostly a psychological advantage," Philadelphia assistant Alex English said about his days of playing home games for the Denver Nuggets from 1980-90 at McNichols Sports Arena. "Players knew about the altitude, and it played on their minds."

Teams would go to great measures to combat the altitude. Eng- lish said Houston had oxygen tanks on the bench when big men Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson played together in the mid-1980s. Not that it mattered, since the Rockets went 2-7 in Denver with the Twin Towers.

Well, from what I know from the current Exercise Science class I am in is as follows...
Training at high altitudes trains the body to make the best out of the limited oxygen. Teams that train at home then go to Denver have to get used to the lack of oxygen and it can effect there performance, mostly endurance. The weird thing is, the Nuggets hold an advantage over anyone else because they are used to little oxygen and have built up sources of mitochondria. So when they do go to other cities they can use even more oxygen. So why aren't the Nuggets the defending champs

This is mostly true, but I believe this doesnt help enough to win a championship. Practicing in Denver before a game or arriving a bit early can also help actually. I think I'll go look this up in my text because we haven't really talked about it that much yet.
