Carmelo waits for a Call
As LeBron James, Stephon Marbury and Shawn Marion are offered invitations to play for Team USA, Carmelo Anthony has been left out. For the moment at least.
The latest invitations were made during selection committee conference call Tuesday.
Anthony is expected to be a strong candidate to fill a remaining slot and he would accept if invited.
"There are not a lot of players better than Carmelo left to be considered," the Denver Post’s source said.
I dont see how you can ask Lebron and not Carmelo...that's just not right

Carmelo may or may not be right for the spot, I'm not going to go into that here, but I don't like the idea that some people have that whatever you do or say about one, you must do or say about the other, always... they're not conjoined twins. At some point they're going to have to have separate careers.
If Carmelo gets invited, it should be because of what he can bring to the team and not because he and LeBron must constantly be put together.

Yah I just don't see Melo fitting in w/ team USA. He's so used to being the 1st scoring option, but on the team he'd come of the bench and be like the 4th or 5th. He still needs to improve on his shot selection. But then again, playing with the best may bring out another side of him we haven't seen, kinda like how Iverson transformed into a true PG.
And I don't think the goal is to put together a team of the best players, but to put together a team of great players that are the best in their roles.

how is it not right.. lebron and carmelo are totally different players. just because they are both rookies, doesn't mean the US national team is obliged to take both of them if they take one of them. thats a ridiculous argument imo.
Lebron is the better player of the two, his game is more complete, and he has a large physical advantage over the opposing guards when it comes to international play. He will also bring interest to the games(since he has been deemed the future of basketball), which is part of the national teams goals.

It's a two-way street though. I'm sure everybody would be up in arms if Carmelo was asked before Lebron.

Melo in contention for a trip to Olympics
Quote:
USA Basketball spokesman Craig Miller told the Rocky Mountain News that Anthony remains under consideration.
"The committee is aware of his ability," he said. "They're still trying to put together the best team possible."

i think he should just play for puerto rico since they have so many up-and-coming players so in like 15 years, he will be able to say that he was one of the guys that helped to develop basketball in puerto rico. he was right in the middle of the improvement of what could become a very good basketball team... plus he will be a perrennial player for puerto rico where as with the us, his part on the team wont be guaranteed

If he does play for Puerto Rico, he will never be eligible to play for the USA.

I think the committee knows that Carmelo is an average at best player if he's not one of the the first options on a team. He doesn't move well without the ball, pass, hit the three, or put in much effort on defense. He's an incredible ISO player but James's game just fits so much better in international play.
Team USA is not obliged to choose Anthony if they choose James. The only thing they have in common is that they are both young rookies and the media makes it out like they HAVE to be the next Bird-Magic. They go to great lengths to promote a rivalry that doesn't even exist.
