Things to improve on as we move on to the next round...
I think bench play is obviously one, and it's been an on and off problem all season long. Larry talked about it himself in the Detroit News today and although he keeps saying the solution is to play the bench more it hasn't happened that much and when he does play the bench more there are mixed results.
Quote:
Pistons coach Larry Brown was not pleased with the way he used his reserves in the series.
"I didn't like it," he said. "And I am going to do something about it. I am going to play more guys in the next series."
Antonio McDyess played 21 minutes and Lindsey Hunter 12. Darvin Ham played one minute. Carlos Arroyo didn' t play.
"The games were dictating that," Brown said. "But I have to find a way to get them in. Arroyo is going to play. Obviously, he can help us. And what the way he was on the bench, up and cheering and into the games, I thought that was pretty neat."

Anyone else agree or feel different?

He will play the bench when he needs to. Larry knows how to use his team to win. Against Philly we couldn't put the bench in as much because AI was playing 48 minutes a game, thus our countering with heavy starter minutes. It will work itself out next round.

I think Ai's minutes reflected heavily on why Arroyo didn't play as much in this series as well. I mean let's face it, Hunter is a better defender and matchup for Iverson. He'll get more PT come the second round, Elden should too.

This makes me even more optimistic with having Arroyo here. It seems like there are a few problems between Brown and Arroyo. But this quote in a way shows that even if Brown isn't happy with Arroyo's play, he's not using the same perspective with everything that Arroyo does. If that makes any sense. The quote also says that Arroyo will play though anyway, so that solves that problem too.
I'm just glad that Arroyo and Brown didn't decide to be mad at each other and let it ruin their relationship, because I think Arroyo can really help us.

I must agree that the AI matchup is what kept Arroyo out of this series, he woulda been lamb to the slaughter tryin to defend AI. Im hoping that Arroyos cheering and energy he was displaying on the bench wasnt just for show. Cause if he was that into these games while not playing? he will be a huge factor when he gets in and hopefully he learned from watching Lindsey bust his arse on D that if he puts forth that type of effort on D? he will play alot more minutes. I would also like to see Dupree on the floor for a few minutes just to see if his athleticism can get a few hustle points and D.

Yeah like you all are sayin the bench needs to score more, but that being said they haven't been granted much time I'd like to see Billups keep tryin to take it to the hole more he's quicker then I thought he was and stronger then most guards

I like the way Billups is kinda sitting back and trying to get everyone else going and not really concentrating on his offense unless we are in need. That requires alot of restraint on his part and really shows his commitment to the team first attitude. I think Dyess needs to try to get some shots going to the hoop instead of relying on a fadeaway and taking the deep shots on the baseline. I know that those are his bread and butter, but he needs to get some easy shots to drop to get his confidence back.

Re: Things to improve on as we move on to the next round...
From the May 6 Detroit News:
Quote:
The reserves were one group that didn't have much relaxation Thursday. Darvin Ham, Elden Campbell, Carlos Arroyo, Carlos Delfino, Dark Milicic, Ronald Dupree and Horace Jenkins were worked hard by Brown. He had them playing three-on-three, and he stopped the plays to teach positioning or to correct mistakes.
Brown was in full teacher mode, yelling out instructions and criticism over a 40-minute set.
"Man, that was a workout, he really took it to us," said Jenkins, who was dripping with sweat after practice. "But it's all good. We need that, and LB wants to make us better. So here we are."
Brown said he enjoyed the chance to prepare the reserves.
"We have a responsibility to work with them," he said. "They've not played a lot, it's a good chance to coach them and hopefully make them better. I think it's great, I think kids get better in an environment like this. We owe it to them."

Looks like Brown is getting the troops ready for war. I say bring him out and see how they do. Arroyo needs time to shine.
