Rumor has it that Dallas is going to cut Michael Finley in the next few days. What are the Piston fan's feelings about going after him as a backup for next season? I know it's a long shot by every sense of the word but we do need some scoring off the bench and we have seemed to like veterns. At 32 years old, would he be worth to look at as a short term answer as a backup?
I'm in the middle on him. I like his game but I wouldn't want to give him a full MLE at this point of his career. I think it would be a good way to help if Delfino can't play at the level we need yet.

I don't understand why Dallas would simply cut Finley. He has a big contract, but cutting him won't fix anything. Maybe they want to negotiate a buyout or something.
I would give him the full MLE for three years and a 4th year team option. Finley would "kill two birds with one stone" so to speak. He can back up both Rip and Tayshaun, and Delfino can still play limited minutes at those positions also. Give me Arroyo off the bench at PG, McDyess and Milicic as the two backup bigs and we're good to go IMO.

The new CBA is going to allow teams to cut 1 player per team, and his salary will count vs. their cap, they will have to pay him, but that cut amount will not go towards luxury taxes.
So lets say over the next few years Finley will make 30 million (I don't know what it is), Cuban saves himself from paying a dollar to dollar tax on that contract.

Yeah, I read into that. From what I understand, if Dallas waives Finley, they'd still owe him all the money that he's due to make, except his salary won't count against the cap. In the long run, that'll save Cuban from paying a ton of money due to the luxury tax.

I just reread the situation, he is owed 51 million from the Mavs, then the Mavs would owe the NBA 51 in luxury taxes... so the Mavs would have to pay him 102 million over the next 3 years for him to remain a Mav... He's not worth 51 million over 3 years LOL.
It would be sound to waive him.

They dont pay him 102 million they pay him 51 million and the league 51 million in taxes. If cut then they just need to pay him 51 million and the league nothing.

Well we have things covered from a financial point of view. It's good it theory, what about in practice. I can't say I've seen a lot from Mike Finley over the years, but he's one of those players that I've always liked. Can he D up?
I dont think D is what we need from any free agent we pick up. I would be pleased if we could get a free agent or even a draft pick that could come off the bench and be a scorer first, we have had far too many scoring droughts this season where nobody could hit a thing. Even if Finley isnt much of a defender? he will have Ben and Sheed behind him to help him look better. We really missed the offensive spark that Corliss and Memo gave us last year off the bench. That should be our biggest concern in deciding what additions we need this off season.
