Re: NBA Draft

Well.. to be fair to Dumars, we did get a steal with Amir Johnson at 56. I still think Maxiell was not a great first round choice.

Yes, that was me that wanted Ilyasova. This guy was no reach at #36, fantastic pick for the Bucks. Ilyasova was a potential lottery pick had it not been for a sprained ankle this past season that lowered his stock.

Take a look at this:

14. Mateen Cleaves
9. Rodney White
2. Darko Milicic
----
23. Tayshaun Prince
38. Mehmet Okur

The jury is still out on Darko, but Joe Dumars has a history of bad drafting. They guys as good as it gets when it comes to current NBA players, but he's had three lottery picks and none of them have done anything in the NBA, period. Prince was his one steal, Okur is credited to our European scouts. Now we add Jason Maxiell to that list? The guy would have fallen to the mid-2nd round had we not picked him in the 1st.

Re: NBA Draft

Joe had just taken over a dead franchise when Mateen was taken, and everyone thought RWhite was a steal at the time. Darko is still a great pick and the rest are fine

I'd rather have seen Stoudamire at 26 but Maxiell has a NBA body, Pistons' attitude and monster arms. We needed a low post offensive threat and he's it.

Re: NBA Draft

Remember we did break even on RWhite by trading him for another first round draft pick. Stoudamire would have been a fun pick at 26 but I am sure Joe D already has a free agent shooter in mind. Big guys are always harder to come by I guess.

Re: NBA Draft

Acker was a very good pick he has alot of talent and if he get's it togheter he could be a steal. Then you guys get Johnson in the second to send to the D-League not a bad pick. Maxiell might be a bad pick with Stoudamire and Turiaff still available.

Re: NBA Draft

Johnson was my favorite pick because he might have the highest reward. I will not go against Joe D's call on Maxiell. Remember the last 4 year college guy with super long arms we drafted

Re: NBA Draft

This was a solid B draft. They got a potential Bosh player in Amir J., a defensive juggernaut in Maxiell and a well rounded guard with potential to be a defensive stopper in Acker. And notice the trend that all three of these young guys have length because in the end that is what matters in the NBA. J. Maxiell is 6'7 with 7'3 arms, think about it you do not use your head to block shots or dunk the ball or grab rebounds, a player uses his arms for this an with his athleticism and feel for the game (defensively) we have a potential steal. These analysis are not reaching, this was a deep draft 1-60. The only problem with these new Pistons is that they will not see much floor time this year. Then expect Amir and Acker to go to the NBDL next year once it is implemented (though I wouldnt be suprised for Acker to stick in the roation for a handful of minutes as a defensive specialist).

Again, I am enjoying these picks for the Pistons. All three are strong rebounders at their respected position and all three can defend and run on the break. Maxiell sure would have been valuable in Game 7 of the finals when all of our bigs were in foul trouble, the kid is ready to play now.

You just cant make it being a 6'5" power foward in the NBA.
And please don't tell me his blocked shot numbers in college. Big difference between blocking those great UAB players and blocking Tim Duncan. I don't think he'll be in the NBA in 2 years, but I could be wrong.

you could be right that you could be wrong, as a matter of fact, I think you are 100% right that you will be wrong. This guy will be a long time NBA player, see my above post for why.

Tell me why his height matters if his wingspan is 7'3"
