Pistons Keep Popping

Quote:
Pistons keep popping

What luck for the NBA: The day the Pistons came barreling through New York this past week, all anybody wanted to talk about was Antonio Davis up in the United Center stands, rescuing Kendra and the kids.

But as you've probably noticed, the Pistons are getting to be a fairly interesting story. For one thing, we need to find them some competition. Winners of 32 of their first 37 games and crushing just about everybody in sight, they have a pretty good shot to win 70.

"If we're close to it in April, then we'll make ourselves think about it," said Chauncey Billups. "But right now, all we're thinking about is getting the home court for the playoffs. That's all we're playing for. However many wins it takes, that's what we want. If it's 55 or 65 or something else, as long as it's just one more than other people, that's all we care about."

If it's not 70, it's going to be something in the mid- to high-60s. After trashing their old friend Larry Brown and his Knicks by 26 on Thursday night, the Pistons left town smoking teams by an average of 9.4 points per game. That level of domination is getting up with there some of the best teams in league history. The '86 Celtics beat opponents by 9.4 per game en route to 67 wins, and that figure was matched by the '67 Sixers, who won 68 games. The '96 Bulls mauled opponents by 12.2 points per game in winning a league-record 72 games.

"If these guys were serious, they could win a lot of games," said Ron Harper, a member of the '96 Bulls and now a member of Flip Saunders' staff. "I ain't saying 70, but they could win a lot, if they were serious."

Huh?

"They're not serious," Harper said. "They're the most laid-back group of guys I've ever been around. They would drive (Michael Jordan), Scottie (Pippen) and Phil Jackson crazy. If they played hard every night, you know how good they'd be? They'd blow the league away."

How awesome is that Harper quote. Whether he is right or wrong it's awesome to hear this stuff about the pistons.

Re: Pistons Keep Popping

When I first opened the link I figured it would be about their high 3PT% or the way they just keep poppin' them up even when they aren't hitting. I don't know how that hasn't come back to bite them in the *** yet, lol.

When nearly half the threes are dropping it only makes sense to keep taking them.

In 100 shots x 2pts at 54% vs 100 shots x 3pts at 46% the point difference is 30 points in favor of threes. So statistically it makes sense. 108 points for 2's and 138 points for 3's.

So if we only take 20% of those three pointers per game which would obviously total 20, then we would have 6 points more than if we took those 20 shots inside the arc.
