Wallace on Zone defense and the new ball
Found this on MLive with the Maxiell article
Quote:
Wallace knows that Pistons head coach Flip Saunders plans to have the team play more zone defense this year. That doesn't mean Wallace has to like it.
"I'm not knocking his coaching zone or nothing like that," Wallace said. "I don't want y'all to get it misconstrued, but in the system that I grew up in ... I don't like zone. Zones are terrible. It's just trying to hide the weakest defenders."
Saunders plans to play more zone because, based of the NBA is being officiated, teams that play man-to-man defense exclusively are often at a distinct disadvantage.
"What we saw last year, with (Miami Heat guard) Dwyane Wade in the Finals ... you have to be able to put yourself in position to have help situations," Saunders said.
Pistons guard Flip Murray is in rare company. He actually likes the new basketball that will be used this NBA season. Several NBA players, including most of Murray's teammates, aren't so thrilled with it.
"I worked out with it all summer. I like it," Murray said. "Everybody has to play with it, so everybody has to get used to it."
Wallace is among those who don't like it. He didn't realize so many others felt the same until he shot a Nike commercial in Los Angeles recently with other NBA players, including Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and two-time league MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns.
"Everyone agreed, that new ball is terrible," Wallace said. "I don't see how they can just go ahead and change that, without asking the players. It's crazy, man. It's crazy."
