Jalen Rose may be released...

Do we want him coming off the bench for us? He could play 3 positions for us.

If we didn't have either Delfino or Murray then fine. I don't think he is an upgrade over either of those two at this point in his career.

I don't know how big of a role he would have with the team, but I say sign him just for entertainment purposes.

Re: Jalen Rose may be released...

Not a big fan of his, but he did play much better in New York than he did before. He still has attitude problems and is an absolute no-show on defense, so I doubt he'd be worth taking on.

Re: Jalen Rose may be released...

I completely disagree that Jalen Rose has attitude problems. The Raptors have had a lot of jokers on their team who don't really know how to act like professionals, but Rose was never one of them. People targeted Rose and said he had bad character because of his contract, meanwhile Vince Carter and Rafer Alston were acting like little girls, and don't even get me started on Mike James. From all that I've seen of Rose, on TV and in person, it's obvious that unlike a lot of NBA players, Jalen Rose is real.

He's not about to win defensive player of the year, but he can still be a good offensive player. I'd definitely consider picking this guy up. It doesn't help the growth of Delfino or Murray any, but Rose is better than them right now, by far.

It's the same as any of the other threads we've had (Penny, Grant Hill, etc.), if he's proven healthy and can be had for cheap, then I say go for it.

Re: Jalen Rose may be released...

He's clashed with most of the coaches he's been under. Now, not saying that's all his fault, but there clearly is something to that. He griped in Toronto about having a reduced role (which was both fair and unfair to him, he was playing horribly there last year but he also wasn't getting any time to bounce back), and clashed with Isiah in Indiana. Maybe the problem isn't with his attitude, but he clearly does have a history of feuding with coaches.

As far as player ability goes, you're probably right. He's effective on offense and dangerous from the three, and he's also a fairly good passer, but he basically has to be offensively dangerous to make up for his defense. I lived in New York for a month last year and saw a few Knicks games, and he was awful defensively, even compared to his teammates, who couldn't defend worth a lick either. It's not bad enough to offset his offense (yet), but all told, I don't think we'd come out ahead if we picked him up. I'd be more in favor of it if Ben Wallace were still around, since he could somewhat make up for a bad defender's mishaps.

It's hard to criticize these kinds of pickups since they're almost all low-risk propositions, but they often tend to cut into the development of youth. That's fine if you're definitely a title contender, but it's riskier in my eyes, especially since I consider this season to be more of a question mark than most other people on this board.

Who knows, I could be wrong. It's not like I hate him (can't really hate the Fab Five), I just think his impact is a little overstated.

Re: Jalen Rose may be released...

You make some really good points Goubot. In the long run it will probably not be worth it to pick him up. I just hate how the media and the Raptors organization made Jalen Rose out to be the scapegoat for the Raptors struggles. To me, Rose was one of the only bright spots on that team as far as attitudes are concerned. One day Jalen was the only player with an ounce of talent on the team, and the next day he's getting benched and ridiculed when he questions it. Sam Mitchell is a joke when it comes to handling relationships with his players, and it's a lot easier for the Raptors brass to drop the guy they're paying 13 million dollars (or whatever it was) than it is to fire the coach.

Re: Jalen Rose may be released...

You probably know more about his situation in Toronto than I do. Rose was actually fairly well liked the year before last, and some fans I knew called him Captain Crunch for his clutch play. Alston, for all his complaining, actually wasn't a bad producer that year, and they had a guy named Chris Bosh who I hear is pretty good.

I think Donyell Marshall was also on that team that year, and he shot extraordinarily well, tying the 12 3s in a game record. But yeah, other than those guys and maybe Mo Pete, the team was pretty miserable.

I don't know if you have that kind of time. not saying that he will be in high demand, but waiting to see if Delfino can/will work out will probaly take some time.

I pretty much agree with Lope on this one... I'm thinking Jalen's matured a lot over the years, he's a hometown guy, he can score, and play multiple positions. Before being signed I'm sure Joe D. would talk to him to let him know how things are... if he agrees with it good, if not, then we move on. But at the very least we should talk to him.

Re: Jalen Rose may be released...

This is a tough one.

I remember him from Indiana the year they played againts the Lakers in the finals. I liked his game a lot at that time, but his clearly not the same player like back then.

I think he still can score and that's what we need from our bench. The negative side is that he would take away Delfinos playing time. I think Delfino has potential to be a solid player in this league. He's been playing at the same level, if not better, as Ginobili in the national team the last two summers. He has the talent, but I think he's not mentally nearly as good as Manu.

Rose is a proven player and I think he would be a "safe pick". Knowing he's a very bad defender and because I want to see what Delfino can do, I don't want Pistons to take him. Anyway I won't be too mad if I see him in Piston-uniform.

they should consider it, but it probably wouldn't be wise because they don't have enough minutes for him to be happy

Re: Jalen Rose may be released...

We apparently are looking into him.
Quote:
AUBURN HILLS -- Detroit Southwestern and University of Michigan product Jalen Rose is free to sign with any team he chooses after reaching a buyout agreement (believed to be between $12 million and $15 million) Monday with the Knicks.

"I love Jalen, and I have known him since he was a little kid," Knicks president and coach Isiah Thomas said. "I hope he picks a spot where he has a chance to win a championship."

Could that spot be Detroit? It's likely remote but not completely out of the question.

"I told Jalen that he would have a limited role here in Detroit," said Pistons president Joe Dumars, who spoke to Rose on Monday. "I told him that we were not opposed to bringing him here under the right circumstances. But it would have to be a win-win for both sides."

Rose said he was looking to sign with a contending team, that he was looking for a chance to earn another contract after this season and was hoping to find a situation where he would play 20 to 25 minutes.

Dumars would guarantee neither another contract beyond this season nor that many minutes.

"He will explore other options, I am sure," Dumars said. "He said he would get back in touch with us (today)."

Miami, Dallas and Minnesota are three other teams Rose might seek out.

Rose will turn 34 in January, and his role with the Pistons, backup small forward, would probably be as small as it was in New York. He became expendable there because of the emergence of second-year forward David Lee and rookie Renaldo Balkman.

"Jalen is a proven veteran," Thomas said. "He's going to help somebody's team big-time."

The Pistons also have made commitments to Carlos Delfino and Flip Murray as backups to Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton. Bringing Rose on board would certainly cancel any hope of getting some production out of Delfino, who bristled last season when he shared minutes with Maurice Evans. The Pistons, who have an open spot on their roster, would only offer Rose the veteran's minimum for one year ($1.178 million).

Rose averaged 12.3 points and 2.5 assists with the Knicks and Raptors last season.
I haven't really warmed up to this, but I wouldn't be all that pissed if we did end up signing him. Still, it does seem a little cruel to do this after promising Delfino some regular playing time, which he probably would not get with Rose on board. Now, my confidence in Delfino in general isn't very high, but his own confidence would be killed if this happened. On his best nights, he's average offensively and he'll get you some rebounds and assists while defending well. On Rose's best nights, he can light it up, but he'll get torched at the same time. I dunno.
