This is why I hate David Stern
From McCoskey's blog
"Here's one for you: You may have noticed that Wallace was on the bench in the first half of the game at Miami Friday but not in the second half. Here's why. Somebody from the league office saw him on the bench, deemed that his dress was not appropriate, called Pistons PR man Kevin Grigg and had Wallace banished to the locker room. Wallace was wearing dress slacks and a long-sleeve, collered, button-down dress shirt -- I think it's called a walking suit, but don't hold me to that. Bottom line, for Sheed, it was formal wear. But some league fashionista didn't like it. Apparently, the dress code mandates that players wear a sports coat when they are on the bench. Whatever. If he was wearing jeans or a sweatsuit, yeah, boot him off the bench. But to pick on him for what he wore Friday was petty. Sheed had to stay in the locker room again Saturday for the same reason."

Its an important issue because Rasheed can fire up the team from the bench. I saw what he was wearing which was the most dressed up I have ever seen Rasheed. For the league to call him on it is stupid.

Sheed isn't actually paranoid. The league really does discriminate against him. He basically gets techs for barely doing anything and they kick him out when he isn't even playing. WTF?

While I think this is a stupid rule, I don't think it was only enforced because it was Rasheed. I am sure the NBA has done it to a few other players this season without anyone bringing it up because it wasn't someone as visible as sheed

Re: This is why I hate David Stern
It's been clearly stated that a sports coat is needed since the rule was put in place. The same has been done with other players, and will happen to other players in the future. I don't understand what the fuss is about. Rasheed must know the rules, the Pistons must know the rules. Otherwise they wouldn't have agreed to move him. And to think Sheed didn't learn the second time? Does Rasheed deserve special treatment?

I dont think anyone was asking Rasheed to get special treatment. This is the first issue, us Piston fans, have seen take place.

It shows Stern is a total tyrant. What difference does it make if he wears a sport coat?

I dunno but Shaq had to stay in the locker room one game this season when he was hurt because even though he was wearing a a suit, he left his jacket somewhere and was kicked off of the bench. This all started with RonRon going into the stands. It's his fault.

No real difference in my mind. A shirt is business attire in my eyes. However, as long as there is a standard and punishments are equal I see no problem. If it were only Rasheed who had been punished and others had gone unpunished, then I'd be complaining about double standards. But having the same play out with other players during the season, I don't see what the big deal is. Again, it's not as if the rule is news to the player, team or agent. Somebody should be reading the rule book.
To me, it's more a slip up on the organization/players part. If it's so important to have Sheed's courtside cheerleading then the Pistons should have made sure under no uncertain terms that Sheed was aware he needed a sportscoat BEFORE the game. Doesn't take a whole lot of attention to detail. Every team and player was sent the rules before the season, so why complain about the L now? Stern might be on a power trip, but he hasn't sprung a quick one on Sheed.
Just because it's "dressed up for Sheed" does not mean it meets standards set 6 months ago.

I never said he should be allowed on the bench because he was as dressed up as he ever will be but it was a big step for him. No championship belt or headphones are a postive sign

Re: This is why I hate David Stern
The rule enforcement was probably actually a type of favor to Sheed. I can imagine he would have gotten a technical from the bench by now and would be suspended because of it

No, you didn't. That was directed towards the original quote from the blog. The quote implies that because it was as formal as Sheed had ever been seen he should have been on the bench.

It basically implies that because it was Sheed-formal and it wasn't jeans nor a sweatsuit it was petty of the NBA to kick him off the bench. In other words, they should have left him there if they weren't so anal.
I'm not debating my stance towards the rule, nor do I necessarily agree he should have been kicked off the bench for wearing no coat. But as long as it's consistent I won't complain. What I will complain about is how it happened twice to Sheed. As a mentioned in my previous post, why didn't Sheed, Pistons management or his agent read the rules and correct the situation? If he is wanted on the bench, you'd think at the very least they would have known the second time round.

As I said later on, this is the first real infraction the Pistons have seen and taken part in of this type. We are all figuring out the ins and outs as we go. Non-issue now though since everything went smoothly against Memp
