Pistons sign Jarvis Hayes

LINK

They needed another wingman, so this is a great move. Hayes could be the steal of the Free Agent market this year. He was a high draft pick and had a great rookie season but has struggled with injuries since then.

PG: Chauncey Billups...Rodney Stuckey...Lindsey Hunter
SG: Richard Hamilton...Ronald Murray...Arron Afflalo...Sammy Mejia
SF: Tayshaun Prince...Jarvis Hayes...Ronald Dupree
PF: Jason Maxiell...Antonio McDyess...Amir Johnson
C: Rasheed Wallace...Nazr Mohammed

Re: Pistons sign Jarvis Hayes

My initial reaction is that I really like the signing. I was very high on him coming out of college. He's had some injuries and didn't produce like they hoped last year, but hopefully he can turn that around. At the very least, I'm 10x more comfortable going into the season with Hayes as the backup 3 than with Dupree and Mejia.

This does mean that they now have 16 players under contract though (Cheik Samb was signed), so one will have to be cut before the season starts. My guess is Lindsey Hunter will retire.

The worst case scenario is that it gives the Pistons somebody else they can put on Lebron in the postseason.

I guess its a good signing, but we are seriously thin up front. It's not like we have a lot of chips to trade away right now either. Call me when they sign a C.

Re: Pistons sign Jarvis Hayes

i like this signing alot! If he can stay healthy, come on arnie, he's a viable option to get some good mins behind prince. From what I can find hes a good spot up shooter ok from 3. I was quite worried about the backup 3 would of liked to get posey but i'm fine with, from what i can see, is a 1 year min tract. Picking up a couple of 2nds for Carlos seems less crazy at this point.

With the departure of Delfino, Hayes should prove very effective

Re: Pistons sign Jarvis Hayes

I looked on ESPN and saw that we signed Hayes and I thought it was the Rockets' Chuck Hayes. I got really excited for a while but was disappointed that it was Jarvis. I'm not sure where Chuck would fit in our overloaded frontcourt, but he seems like he'd be a great Piston subjectively.

As for Jarvis, I'm pretty lukewarm, but they haven't said anything about the length of this deal or how much money he's getting. He seems to be a decent but not outstanding shooter. He rarely gets to the line (which is a negative in my book because that's one of our weaknesses) and his percentages really aren't very good. According to his hotzones page, he's a pretty awful midrange shooter (especially from straight up) who may actually be better off chucking 3s. He doesn't even seem to get on hot streaks like Ronald Murray occasionally does. My brother (who lived in Washington for a while) said that he couldn't get much separation and was forced into crappy long jumpshots a lot, which makes me worry about his athleticism. On the plus side, he's still relatively young and players whose careers don't take off on their first team have often done better with a change of scenery (Drew Gooden is one example. He was mediocre in his first stops and became above average in Cleveland), but sometimes a bust is a bust. I really hope he can turn it around but I doubt it for some reason.

I'm not at all sold on this signing, as I think that Hayes is at best mediocre on offense and average or so on defense, but it's much preferrable to having Prince killing himself for the season and then burning out. When everyone in Washington was dying at the end of the season, Hayes became the starter and he didn't embarass himself, so that's something.

As a sidenote, I would've loved it if we picked up Ime Udoka, who has shown that he can be a decent starter (albeit on a bad team, but Hayes was a bad reserve on an average one). He's already shot better than Hayes has in his entire career and he's a good defender. But the damn Spurs picked up him for cheap, which is another good move on their part considering Bowen's age. Stupid smart Spurs. Pietrus wouldn't be a bad option but he'd cost more and he seems to be staying in GS.

Re: Pistons sign Jarvis Hayes

Udoka's 30.
He's not a excellent young prospect, he's quite old by NBA standards. He's only played 87 games over 3 seasons in the nba, and last season was the first he got any decent playing time.
I'm not saying he's not a good pickup, because shooting and defense are always valuable - but he's not some kind of SF of the future.

I like the Hayes signing, a decent defender; his main problem is staying healthy enough to contribute.
You don't want him playing big minutes though, but I don't think he was ever intended to (on the Pistons).

How well is the Knicks Starters vs NBA Team Starters? 60%? 50%? 40%? or are we waiting to see by being optimistic because we have a new additional player in the Starting lineup that we assume Stat sheet record says he is better with this Knick roster than the guy he is replacing?

Re: Pistons sign Jarvis Hayes

Wasn't aware that he was 30. I can see what you're saying, but still, the Pistons have a window of about two years at best before they should probably start reloading, so I would've liked to have picked up the one who's played better. Udoka played better last season than Hayes has in any of his seasons. You could argue that scouting reports on him were poor and his shooting may have been a little flukish, those are all valid concerns.

Ideally, someone like Pietrus would come over but is out of our price range and he'd be going from the fastest pace in the league to one of the slowest, so I don't know how he'd handle that. At any rate, the Hayes signing was only a small part of the mid-level exception so it's not really a risk, but I'm not sure how happy I can be about picking up someone who's been mediocre and low efficiency so far. But as I said, he's a Piston now and I really hope a change in scenery will do him some good. Still, the best I'm expecting is a 10-15 minute breather for Prince who hopefully won't hurt us much against other teams' backups.

Re: Pistons sign Jarvis Hayes

I remember Jarvis Hayes putting together a decent rookie season, and to be honest, I don't think a player can completely lose that. Hayes has been affected by injuries throughout his career, but we have one of, if not, the best training staffs in the NBA.

Between Hayes, Rodney Stuckey and Aaron Afflalo, we have a decent collection of guards to put out to spell our starters. The more options we have, the more likely we are to find somebody that can fit into and stay in our rotation... right?
