Pistons exercise Maxiell and sign Fitch

The Detroit Pistons exercised their option to extend forward Jason Maxiell's contract through the 2008-09 season on Monday, and signed guard Gerald Fitch.
Maxiell, who was drafted with the 26th pick overall in 2005, is expected to play a key role in Detroit this season.
He played a career-high 67 games last season, averaging five points, nearly three rebounds and almost a block in just 14 minutes a game. He started eight games and took advantage of the opportunity by averaging 8.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in 26-plus minutes a game.
"Jason is a tough, physical player on the front line who continues to grow and mature within our system," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said in a statement. "We look forward to the contributions he will bring this season and beyond."

Great news on Maxiell. I don't know anything about Fitch, but he must be worth a shot!

Fitch was the starting PG at Kentucky a few years back I believe. Maybe it's a different Fitch I'm thinking about.

That's him. He was on the Heat for a while in 2005-2006 before we traded him for Derek Anderson. He's a good-great defensive player, but he really wasn't much of an offensive player last I saw him. Maybe he's changed. Good to hear he's got a shot to get back in the league.

I just watched him at open practice, and you are right about defense. He gave intense pressure from the full court, and couldn't be passed, which isn't easy to do at all.
On offense he was making a lot of effort to do something, but no real opportunities arose. Unfortunately for him I don't think he is going to have an opportunity to show anything.
