Something Has to Change

Quote:
With the 0-7 Pistons start to the season, itís clear that something has to change. It made it that much more obvious Saturday night when The Rockets went on a 22-1 run to bury Detroit in the 96-82 loss. Letís put aside the fact that they got dealt a blow when they were sent on a six game West road trip after their hope opener. Sure it was tough, but those are the things that any NBA team must overcome.

Now itís time to make a change.

Iím not sure if coach Frank is on the hot seat just yet, but heís really got to be thinking about this very similar situation he was in when he was coaching The Nets. Frankís team had the worst start to an NBA season losing 17 straight before being fired. That Nets team was injury plagued, but effort and energy was clearly missing as the losses kept mounting.

So what does Frank have to do? He needs to change things, and change them fast.

Lets start with the fact that this team has no real shooter. Stuckey is far from a shooter, he wants to be D-Wade. Tayshaun can be when heís hot, which is about one in 10 games if the Pistons are lucky. Austin DayÖ Iíll let you finish that one. So who does that leave? Charlie Villanueva, yes thatís who it leaves. Clearly there is a problem.

They have Jason Maxiell starting at power forward. Bless him for playing his heart out, but he would never be a starter on any other team, let alone at PF. Donít get me wrong, I like Maxiell, but I like him coming off the bench and bringing defense and energy.

A loss tonight against OKC puts them at 0-8 for the first time in franchise history.

Re: Something Has to Change

Everyone saw this coming. They should never have resigned Stuckey and Prince, mediocre vets who aren't taking them anywhere.

Frank needs to accept the obvious and make this a development year. Start Drummond alongside Monroe and see how they go, play the kids and help their development. They're heading for a top 3 pick anyway.

This is the best thing they could possibly do, long-term. Move Prince to a playoff team for an expiring and whatever you can get, accept that you probably have to ride out the Stuckey/Villanueva deals for one more year, and hope you can land an all-star swingman in the draft. Go into the summer of '14 with Monroe, Drummond, Knight, Draft pick X, and the cap space to make a major move. There's nothing that makes this team a playoff squad this year, and with the Pistons owing Charlotte a protected first it's better that way anyhow.

How come Dumars' name never comes up in these Pistons discussions? Please tell me he's not still surfing on that 2004 championship.

It saddens me to see Tayshaun Prince wasting away on this team.

Re: Something Has to Change

^ Tayshaun Prince made that decision himself though. He could've bailed elsewhere, but noone would've paid him the way the Pistons just did. $27M for 4 years? He's making 6.7M this year and has 3 years left on this deal. He's 32 and giving you 11 and 4.

Stuckey is making 8.5M this year, and has another year remaining. He's giving you 9 points per game right now.

Like Bogg said, trade these guys for whatever you can get, retool with a core of Monroe/Knight/Drummond and top 3/4 pick (swingman) plus cap space.

Just terrible by Dumars.

I would like to see them try the twin towers route.

As has been said, may as well. They're a lotto team either way, so they may as well develop the kids.

Re: Something Has to Change

Agreed with everything. Joe Dumars brought back Prince and Stuckey for "veteran leadership." Really summarizes how terrible he has been the past 8-9 years.
