ISSUE: Drummond's Playing Time.

At this point in time the 7-15 Pistons (7-7 since getting that first win) are playing Andre Drummond 17.9 minutes per night, this places him next to Jared Sullinger and between Moe Harkless and Festus Ezeli in terms of minutes per night at 16th amongst rookies. This is the 9th choice in the draft, a top rated guy who "fell" to that spot. Playing on a team with Jason Maxiell, a competent but hardly superlative player, at starting center. In his limited playing time he has a PER of over 20.

While the Pistons were mired in an 0-8 start - this had a lot of fans crying out at the rotations of coach Frank (is it just me or is it really fun calling him Larry Frank?). Drummond was playing strong ball and averaging 15.75 minutes per night. But over the past 14 the team has stabilized as a .500 team (thanks in part to an easy schedule, but also thanks to winning the games they should win). Andre Drummond played just over 17 minutes per night over the next 7. And has played 21.47 minutes in the most recent 7.

At times we're going to see Frank play him less than 20 minutes (he played 19 and 12 against Memphis/Dallas just last week). And we're going to be frustrated. But overall his minutes are trending up, and it is turning into much less of an issue.

And I'm honestly pretty pleased with the progression. It looked painful to the fans as it happened, but right now as we look back at his time early in the season? That's a pin-prick. 10% of the season. The NBA is an 82 game season. The NBA season is almost 50 games longer than his full season last year. He played 28 minutes per night at UCONN last year. He's trending toward that right now - by the end of the season I think we'll see him out on the floor 25-28 minutes per night.

And you know what? It may be hurting the Pistons right now not having him on the floor - he makes good things happen, he really does. But he's not going to hit a rookie wall this year. Frank is doing an excellent job with him, and I'm happier as the season moves on.

Re: ISSUE: Drummond's Playing Time.

So, over his last 10 games Drummond's averaging a bit over 7 and 7 with 2 blocks in 20 minutes of playing time. It's beginning to look like the Pistons have, at worst, a nightly double-double that protects the rim a year or two down the line. I hope Detroit's smart enough to go big and build around Monroe and Drummond instead of dealing one away to get a swingman. If you have two really good big men you're only ever one top perimeter player away.

This is what it truly boils down to for this franchise. It would be banana sack crazy for them to trade either one of these guys for a swingman. Assuming Charlie V opts in (and why wouldn't he?), they still only have a little over $42 mil in guaranteed contracts next season. They need to not overpay Maxiell or any other under-sized veteran big and stick with the two young fellas in the front court. Ideally, they would find someone to take Tayshaun off their hands.

Re: ISSUE: Drummond's Playing Time.

Assuming they wind up picking somewhere around 8-10, I'd love to see them work out a trade that nets them Eric Bledsoe. You can roll with a core of Bledsoe-Knight-Monroe-Drummond and hope that something happens to bring that final piece to your team to push you over the top.

I'm actually going to disagree with this. I don't think a Bledsoe/Knight back court fits very well at all with Monroe Drummond. I would much prefer a more traditional catch-and-shoot shooting guard with size and an unselfish PG who could hit a wide-open jumper consistently. Maybe a Mike Conley or even a Greivis Vasquez type at PG with a Klay Thompson or Paul George type of guy at SG. Don't get cute when you have a legit twin towers line-up. Stay traditional.

Re: ISSUE: Drummond's Playing Time.

Unfortunately, guys like Thompson and George aren't available for what the Pistons are willing to give up. I suppose you could try to work out some sort of deal for Jeremy Lamb, but I don't know that he's actually better than Knight (shooting 45% from three!) for several years. Bledsoe's athleticism and defensive ability give him a shot at being much better than either Conley or Vasquez. It all depends on who/if anyone slips down the draft board to them this coming summer, but with a good core of three young guys, a draft pick to trade, and plenty of cap space, the next eight months or so are when the Pistons should look to swing a big move or two, as well as giving Monroe a big fat extension to stick around, to ensure a bright future.

Re: ISSUE: Drummond's Playing Time.

You need to pair Knight with a guard that has some size, can play perimeter defense and shoot when asked. If only Kyle Singler had a touch more athleticism... I'd trade two inches of his height for some more foot speed so he could at least competently D up strong shooting guards...

Re: ISSUE: Drummond's Playing Time.

I mean, we can debate who exactly the Pistons should go after at a later date. I only mentioned Bledsoe because I think the Clippers need to make him available. The important thing is that I think we're all in agreement that the Pistons should keep Monroe and Drummond together instead of using one of them as a trade chip (unless, of course, a perennial all-star suddenly becomes available).

Re: ISSUE: Drummond's Playing Time.

"When we don't play Andre 18 minutes, the reporters (who cover the Pistons regularly) have pictures of me up all around town -- and the fans, too," said Frank, who used that benchmark because [Toronto Raptors rookie Jonas] Valanciunas played 18 minutes in the Raptors win Tuesday at Cleveland. "But the thing is, there are certain things that we're privy to things that maybe the general public isn't.

"There's a lot of things we see and understand the big picture. Not that there's a right way or wrong way, but it's the way we choose it. Plus, there are other guys who may also be doing their jobs as well."

Sounds to me like their may be some personal issues there

Re: ISSUE: Drummond's Playing Time.

I think it sounds more like problems understanding the playbook or problems with his defensive rotations or problems with his work ethic in practice.

I think the thing that Frank is "privy" to that nobody else can see is the giant erection he's harboring for Jason Maxiell.

He might be harboring the delusion that playing Maxiell will increase his trade value so a contending team might throw a draft pick their way at the deadline for him.

He's a 5 million dollar expiring, who looks more explosive and athletic this year than he has in at LEAST three to four years. It isn't too far fetched, considering that his contract is an expiring and he's actually a very useful bench big. He's being exposed as a starter but his high energy style of play would work well off of the bench where his size would be less of an issue.
