Aaron Gray is a 7 foot 1 inch, 280 pound Senior Center for Pitt. He tested the waters last summer, so he has an idea of what he needs to improve upon.
He has the size you want in a Center, but not the athleticism. Even though he is a Senior, he still has a lot to develop in his game as he is the classic late bloomer.
He is projected as a first rounder, but I really wonder if a team would actually select him in round 1.
I still can't get over how a much skinnier Patrick O'Bryant tossed him around like a rag doll in last year's tournament. He's going to show me something against big time competition(I don't care how many double-doubles he has against scrubs) to make me think he's anything more than a stiff backup at the next level.
Bout time someone had a thread about this guy. It seems like he gets no respect whatsoever. What it boils down to in the end is that he is 7 foot and actually likes to play in the post, not your perimeter loving bigs out there nowadays. Mid to late loterry would be good for him. He can be a serviceable back up type center. And oh by the way, he is world's better than O'Bryant.
I would never draft him. And frankly, if I was a GM I would either luck into someone like Dwight Howard or Greg Oden, or I'd have a revolving door of veterans covering the center position. I hate just about every center in every draft, and I think if someone did a regression, I think there is probably less correllation between success and draft position at Center, than at any other position. It just doesn't make sense to me to draft a center, especially someone like Gray, in the lottery. Taken from last year's draft, you can get someone like Ronnie Brewer or Rodney Carney, or Thabo Sefalosha there, why take a big stiff like Gray? *Sigh* There's one every year.
But the precedent has already been set by the O'Bryant signing. If he could get drafted, then why shouldnt Aaron Gray a better prospect be at least a late round pick
Because O'Bryant, and Curtis Borchardt, and Rafael Araujo, etc, didn't deserve to be taken as high as they were. Someone screwed up. If Aaron Gray goes mid-first round someone is going to be making the same mistake again.
I agree. I wouldn't waste a lottery pick on this guy. He looks like he's running in cement out there. I just don't think him and his game translates well into the NBA game.
This guy is worthless on the pro level. Adonal Foyle type talent.

He's 7'1", 280. He's strong. He plays well on both ends. Other than the Suns, and a couple other teams, who runs anyway?
Wow, have you followed the league the last couple of seasons. Tweeners are the new "it", my man. Every single team or most of them is adapting an uptempo style. You see guys like Jason Maxiel and more combo forwards strive in this type of offense. Having a stiff like Aaron Gray would just completely take it out of him.
