I'm driving across the country
Yes I'm going back to Cali. My employer is paying for people to pack and move me and also gave me a $15,000 tax free lump sum for expenses. I can have my car shipped or drive it and get paid 55.5 cents a mile. If I fly I will have to pay for the ticket out of the $15,000 (that I don't have to account for)... that got me to thinking: when again in my life am I going to have a chance to drive cross country?
I'm leaving from Bristol, VA to Bakersfield, CA. Every map says to take I-40. Anyone have any other suggestions? Taking I-40 I plan on making hotel stops at the following stops- Memphis OK City Albuquerque and deciding between Lake Havasu or the Grand Canyon for the final night Any places to stop to eat along I40? Help me out... I don't want to be arguing with R-star at a truck stop on my iPad as a break.

Re: I'm driving across the country
Cadillac Ranch is just off I-40.
edit: If I remember at work tomorrow, I'll ask some people from Arkansas if there are any must eat places just off of I-40

Re: I'm driving across the country
If you want a REAL experience, stay in Laughlin, NV!
One of few places on earth where Women's Hee-Haas are looser than the slots! In all seriousness, I-40 from Flagstaff to Barstow is a terrible drive and boring as hell.

Re: I'm driving across the country
I did a similar drive, but I stopped in STL and Albuquerque, however I was lucky enough to end in SD
. I would definitely stay near the Grand Canyon if you dont want to finish the drive to Bakersfield. The sunrise is amazing.

Re: I'm driving across the country
Sedona, Arizona is near I40. I think it's the most beautiful city I've ever been to in America. It's funny, I had a roommate in college and he once told me how when he retires he wants to move to this beautiful city in Arizona and I said the same thing and then we realized we were both talking about the same city.
You should stop by and grab some food there maybe walk around.

Re: I'm driving across the country
Boring if you're driving alone. But if you're going that route and you've got a group of people with you, you don't even realize it. On the way back, though, from Vegas to Barstow when everyone is tired as ****, that's when it's the worst drive.

Re: I'm driving across the country
Yes... Yes it is.
You get to pass the meth-junky town of Needles, CA. I kid you not, that is what it's called. It's a terrible drive, I went from Barstow to Laughlin in March.
