I was in a bar yesterday. 3 middle aged women, dressed to impress, strolled in. I was patiently waiting my turn at the bar, then I heard shrieking. The ladies were gesturing towards a large wasp that had joined the party. I calmly asked for a small glass, pop it over the wasp, used a beer mat to cover the other side, strolled out and released it back into the wild.

I walked into to cheers and banners. Ok, that parts an exaggeration. I got a couple of 'oh, so manly' comments from the ladies, they had a hint of sarcasm but I would like to think they were honest.

The bar lady was so impressed I got 25% off my beer order. That was the best result I could have hoped for.

You scratch the worlds back, and the world gives you cheap beer.

It's a win-win.

Oh ****, I just realised the irony of that story, I tweeted about it 5 minutes after the occasion.

Still, I did the right thing first.

Combined with your other post about life in large cities, that's quite a judgement. That's like saying people in large cities are immature, and people in small towns are mature. I'd say people in small towns are more inclined to help others. It's kind of hard to turn someone away when their options are limited to whatever is in the small town. Where as in the big city, you're willing to let the guy go find another option.

I'd be too preoccupied with suffering to think about that. Also, if I don't know you I assume you'd do everything to stay out of my troubles.

I think I might be going overboard with the 'don't help strangers' credo. It's one thing to walk by someone with some weird shit going on. If someone really needs help, is in your face, and begs you for it, you should consider helping them. Help someone desperate and you're shining beacon of light to them. Their savior, their Jesus.

Once I was in the countryside, and I needed this guy's help. I had just emerged from the brush after a two hour walk. I was a mess; dirty, tired, and frustrated. Sweat had been rolling down my neck and forehead for over an hour, soaking the lapels of my suit. The bottoms of my leather shoes were lined with fertilizer and smelled like shit. I had no idea where I was, I had no bars on my phone, and I needed to call for a ride. I needed to borrow someone's phone.

The sky was darkening, and beginning to share a similar shade with the concrete pavement. The only sources of light were the sparse streetlights, and the headlights of the occasional passing car. After several attempts, I finally stopped trying to wave down cars. I was a little unhappy, but mostly exasperated. I understood. If I saw a lone, well-dressed Chinese man walking down a stretch of farmland, I probably wouldn't stop for him either. Even if he was yelling and waving me down by flapping his arms like a chicken.

The farmland led out to a hilly suburb, which I was forced to hike with an unclear destination. All roads led to Rome, I thought, or a commercial establishment at the very least. I hadn't seen one of those for hours.

I finally spotted a young couple, getting out of their car and into their house. I approached them as non-threateningly as possible. More specifically: I yelled at them, waved my arms in the air, and ran across the street towards them (while yelling Hey buddy), and then stood at the end of their driveway with both my hands in the air shouting a polite request. The goal was to show them that I was unarmed and I wasn't trying to rob them.

I borrowed the guy's phone and called my mom for a ride after getting my bearings. I thanked him profusely, giving him a hug and everything. I was very grateful.

The point is when someone asks you for help, it's totally different than seeing something and interjecting yourself in the situation with an unknown outcome.

Those were two different thoughts. One was the maturity it takes to be willing to effect positive change in your society and the other thought is that larger cities make this more difficult because no one owes anyone anything. You'd be more willing to jump into a burning building to drag out the owner of a shop because you've known him your whole life versus just watching the flames of a Petco as you pass by.

I guess its lucky for you you didn't slip and fall and crack your head on the ground while running to get help eh? Because in that scenario its every man for themselves.

Moral of the story is, if you're sick or dying, go **** yourself. If you need a to borrow a phone for a ride, you're at the top of the list for needing a helping hand.

We're talking about strangers here, not people you know. It seems like people in small towns are more willing to help a stranger, because they are less likely to be jaded after dealing with large amounts of human traffic.

Your comments on maturity v. immaturity really comes down to the level of jadedness of an individual. It's why people in big cities are less inclined to help: they're tired of dealing with strangers. People in small towns welcome strangers. People in farm areas, where foot traffic is barely existent, seem to be highly inclined to help.

Just like any other sequence of events, it's open for interpretation. I don't agree with you interjecting your own values to squeeze a 'moral' out of the story, but that's your opinion and you're certainly entitled to act accordingly.
