I was the last person in america to find out. 6 pm East coast time.
Just had graduated college and was trying to get a camp invite. Spent the morning training in an empty gym, got home at 2 and read on the patio. Back then I only used my cell for emergencies, my wife came home frustrated I ignored her calls all day.

Re: 11 Years Have Passed
High school science class, saw what had happened and watched the second plane hit on tv. Everything was so crazy it took me a while to even remember that not only did my dad board a flight that morning, he was headed to Washington D.C. for a meeting at the Pentagon. I didn't even know for several hours that his flight had been grounded in Atlanta, and I didn't know until later that day and in some cases days later, that several of my family members and close family friends who worked in the World Trade Center were OK.

Re: 11 Years Have Passed
University freshman, I believe it was during my first or 2nd week. I was in the cafeteria and saw it on TV. I remember sitting there watching the news and ended up missing most of my first class.

Re: 11 Years Have Passed
I was in fifth grade, and I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news that day. It was a Tuesday morning obviously. I'd just gotten to school and was walking to my classroom. The first bell hadn't rung yet so kids were still hanging outside the 5th grade building waiting for the teachers to arrive. I walked up to the outside of my classroom and my classmate Darnell (I'll never forget his name even though it's been a decade since I've seen him) says to me "Did you hear about the four planes that crashed?" At first I thought something had happened at an airport or something, and of course hearing that as a ten year-old, I wasn't fully comprehending what he or any of my schoolmates were talking about, nor did they probably.
Then, I'm not sure when exactly, we found out the attack was on the World Trade Center. We knew the Trade Center was a pretty big NYC landmark. By the time my teacher turned on the television to the news, I think both buildings had already come down and we were all just watching the smoke and the debris and the firefighters. I don't know if every kid was paying close attention to the TV or not, but we just sat there all afternoon, no studying, no schoolwork, we just had the news on. My dad might have even picked me up from school early that day. As a kid, you ask yourself "How can the bad guys bring down two of the biggest buildings in the world in just 15 minutes? How could something like this happen?". The magnitude of September 11, 2001 didn't really hit me until about a week later, when I'll never forget being at school and seeing the cover of Time Magazine. I picked up one of those magazines on our teacher's desk, and opened up to a full page picture of a close-up on a tower, with people jumping out of it to their deaths. I'm forever haunted by that photograph. To this day I can't bring myself to go and find it, but I'll never forget it. That image is what I'll remember most from that event. I'll never forget the victims, their loved ones and all the heroes who for that one day became united as one as our nation grieved. I wish America today was as united as we were that day. |

Re: 11 Years Have Passed
I was in 6th grade living in CT, an hour away from NYC. The principal announced both crashes over the PA in homeroom and in my first class, some computers class. Classes went on the rest of the day, with some of my teachers deciding to talk about it instead of teaching what they had planned for the day...I think the faculty decided we were too young to have TVs brought in. The classroom speakers frequently turned on with calls from the office notifying kids that someone was there to pick them up. Us 6th graders wondered if those being brought home had family who were victims in the attack. We found out several days later that one older kid lost a family member.
None of it really hit me until I came home to the TV and saw the images for myself. Pretty surreal feeling seeing the WTC go down, especially when I had gone there for a field trip in elementary school (don't remember when, but the latest possible date would be sometime earlier in 2001). My 11-year-old self didn't think that they would collapse. I also learned from my mom that my dad was in the city that day, and he boarded a train back home not long after hearing the first crash and witnessing firsthand the initial devastation. Obviously just a crazy and confusing day. I still wonder what the world would be like had none of it happened.

Re: 11 Years Have Passed
This is the departure gate of American 11 at the Boston Logan airport. This flag was raised shortly after 9-11, and will most likely never come down. I see this gate quite a bit and it always grabs my eye.
