Music over TV. Music can be anytime, anywhere. TV you have to sit down and watch, even if it was on your laptop.

Without TV, I'd start reading books for fun. In a world without TV, a lot more emphasis would be put on writers. They'd be the guys winning Emmys.

People managed to get by before TV was a big thing. Did you see Mad Men? They did just fine.

As far as the porn goes, you go back to Playboys & Hustlers. Men jerked off differently a few decades ago, but they got the job done all the same. You don't need a technological revolution to help with that.

If you can't play video games on TV, you'd still be able to play PC games on your laptop. That's how they do in China, because of the console ban. They get by there too.

TV has substitutable alternatives, but music is rather unique. The choice is easy.

It's not easy, it's personal preference. Just because you can get by without TV doesn't mean it's the easy choice for everybody.

I've already stated in this thread that I've supplanted music, to a major extent at least, with podcasts. With music as an option I've already found a substitute, who knows what other options would come up if music was voided out?

If anything, podcats replaces TV more than music. There are a bunch of podcasts that cover sports better than any ESPN show. I don't really see it as a substitute for listening to my favorite albums.

If I have to pick between The Walking Dead or Aquemini? Man that's easy!

It functions the same as music would for most people. I listen to it while I run, while I play video games, while I surf the web. It's an extension of radio, its fundamentally different than television.

I do too. I pretty much never listen to music anymore. Stitcher is much more valuable to me than spotify.

TV cannot exist without music. Every TV show uses music to set the tone. Also, modern advertising is all about music. Notice how more and more ads use music to get your attention, rather than launching straight into a speech. Music gets your attention at a higher rate than just talking.

The advertisers have figured out the importance of that audio element. It conjures emotions much more effectively than the visual. You know those ads that tell you to donate money to stray puppies and starving kids? Imagine if they didn't have a musical touch to it, and they just talked. It wouldn't feel the same.

I listen to podcasts too and if you are listening it that way it's just background noise. I didn't get into podcasts until a couple of months ago when I got a promotion that involves driving almost 3,000 miles a month. Hard to focus on a podcast discussion while reading an article or sniping zombies. They could be talking about cow shit for all you care, and it's not really a compelling argument for it to be a substitute for music.

Sure there are plenty of songs that also require active listening, but there is also plenty of music that can be listened to passively.

I generally do not listen to anything other than the video game when I play shooters, so you're assuming something that is not true. I play sports games at zero volume and listen to podcasts. You're a grown man Jamel, you can't tell me you can't pay attention to two things at once...especially if they are engaging you in different (and coexisting) ways. As for running, I don't understand how you can do anything but intently listening to it...it's quite literally the only thing you can hear. It isn't like I'm running with somebody where we are engaging in conversation and I just want ambient noise in the background. Listening to people talk and listening to people sing are, for the most part, the same thing.

I didn't assume anything. You said video games, that opens it up to all genres. No, I can't focus on a conversation while doing something that involves concentration. You must be one of those people that text and play on their phones when people are trying to have a conversation with you.
