Says Detective Lieutenant Raymond Cote, "I just know that he felt very adamant that there could be some type of military mishap that would result in some sort of virus or something being released that could cause terrible things to happen."

Gelderman considered that assertion to be "ridiculous," apparently. The argument escalated from there, causing Gelderman to leave. The argument then continued via text. Finally Gelderman returned home to discover Gurman, rifle in hand. She tried to calm him down but, clearly, to no avail.

According to Gurman himself, "Jess walked into the room and I fired the gun once and hit her. She said, 'Oh my God. What did you do?'" To his credit, Gurman did rush his girlfriend to the hospital after piercing her lung and diaphragm and shattering her ribs.

Gurman's lawyer claims the rifle "went off accidentally." Gurman has been arraigned on one count of attempted murder in the second degree. He has been jailed without bail. Gelderman, meanwhile, is, thankfully, in stable condition. Of course, there's still that pesky bullet in her body.

What is wrong with people?

The last time I got in a physical fight was with my college roommate. He was a baseball player and I played basketball (he played basketball in high school). I was arguing that baseball was a game of skill like billairds or darts and not an actual sport because you didn't need to be athletic to excel in it. I cited tony Gwynn being obese and not having knee cartilage.

I didn't believe any of what I was saying, but I was enjoying getting under his skin. He was so frustrated at my lack of reasoning and my persistent argument that he chucked an Xbox controller as hard as he could at my face. Now this was in 2001, remember how big those controllers were? And remember he played baseball.

So yeah, I can kind of see how this could happen.
