We don't have cartels that own huge swaths of the USA. It's not our permissive gun culture to thank for that.

Automatic weapons have been illegal in the US for forever and a day. Unless when you quote the big scary word "military style" you mean "Look like military weapons." At the end of the day you still need to fire off each round. And the whole "But he didn't have to reload!!!" thing is silly. It only matters when there's someone shooting back and by then it's too late. You need to intervene before that.

Semi-automatic is very easily modified to automatic. See the North Hollywood Bank Robbery.

Re: Children, gunman dead in Conn. elementary school shooting

In all honesty most fully automatic weapons are less effective than semiautomatic weapons in combat. The AK is already pretty hard to hit anything with and most Western military weapons do not allow fully automatic fire in the real sense. The M-4 only fires in three round bursts and for example in the Falklands both sides used FN-FAL's, but the British ones were semiautomatic and much more effective. Of course the FN-FAL is an extreme example because of the power of the cartridge it uses makes it even less effective on full auto. There's not a lot of practical difference between a Bushmaster and an M-4, but of course if you want to be ideologically opposed to common sense, that is your own business.

For the public? Pretty much forever. Semiautomatic just means magazine loaded.
