Does anyone know how to maintain a pool?
So I bought a house with a pool, wasn't actively looking for one but I admit it's a nice perk. When I bought it the old owners showed me what to do, but I was just so excitied and overwhelmed it all glossed over me.
It has one of those independently powered vaccums and I bought a chlorine floater thing. Recently brown algae shit has started to appear on the bottom. I asked people that know about maintaining it and they just mentioned checking the PH level periodically. About once a week I empty the skimmer. Monthly I empty the skimmer at the pump. I scrub the stairs (where the vaccum can't climb) about 4 times a week. Whats causing the algae to form? Is it the vaccum not working? Should I even be worried?

Algae in a pool is a sign that your PH levels are not balanced. Chlorine is just part of the equation. Buy one of these: http://www.intheswim.com/Pool-Chemic...ting-Supplies/ and it will tell you exactly what you need.
Here's a basic DIY: http://www.wikihow.com/Eliminate-and...-Swimming-Pool

You are the man! I invite you to my topless pool party! Just bring topless women.
Will the algae go away when I fix the PH? Sent from my iPhone using Verticalsports.com Free App

Re: Does anyone know how to maintain a pool?
You have to shock your pool and you probably don't have enough chlorine in the pool. A standard sized pool needs two floating chlorine tablet dispensers. Go to your pool store and buy a box of pool shock. That will zap the bacteria and you'll be able to swim within two days. You'll have to wait that long for the pool to neutralize.

The brown/algae is normal. It's probably just dirt. You may need to backwash your vacuum system and clean the debris from the filter.

Re: Does anyone know how to maintain a pool?
There is a floating filter attached to the hose on the pool vac.
As for back washing the pool, you attach a hose to the motor house and flip the switch to backwash. You can either attach the hose to the sewage system or let it drain into the street.
