Re: Tool - 10,000 Days

after another couple of listens this morning - im still disappointed.

vicarious , right in two , jambi , and maybe rosetta stoned could be in the rotation

3-4 out of 11 songs on an album that took 5yrs in the making from a band i have the utmost respect for , its weak.

And you don't like slow type of songs that build into more? I'm excited hearing about that.

I hear a bit of both Aenima and Lateralus sound in just Vicarious. I just don't expect them to write albums just like them though. As long as it has familar Tool sound among the new heavier sound that people have said. I will probably like/love it. Tool never disappoints me.

From what I've read on some Tool boards some people were even disappointed with Vicarious, which I think is great, so I'd imagine those people would be disappointed in the CD as a whole.

I don't mind the slow songs with the buildup at all. They are the reason the Tool CDs are such gems because they pull those off like no one else. But some of the songs on this CD take way too long to build and don't really have the payoff of the past songs. And also, I am a big fan of big voices ... and certainly Maynard is at the top of that list ... but for much of this CD that super powered voice isn't being used.

I don't know .. I do like the songs but I am still a little disappointed. But I love Aenema and how it just comes out and punches you in the face and this one doesn't really do that. I'd say this one is 2 parts Lateralus, 2 parts APC, and 1 part Aenema.

As Dissonance said, it really wasn't 5 years in the making. Most of the guys had side projects or bands and Maynard spent most of that time with APC.

Re: Tool - 10,000 Days

2yrs in the making , 5yr tool hiatus - either way its a long time with no Tool , and APC didnt really do it for me either.

the one thing that i did notice that was kickass was DC's drumming , still taking it to new levels.

maynards vocals were a lot more APC style than traditional tool etc , something else that doesnt sit well with me.

its still a good album compared to the other bands that are out there , but for a tool album it still falls short in my books.

yeah, that is true. I guess, it will be a while before it's all digested for people to know what they feel on it as a whole or in general. I also have to hear it as well. Which will be May 2nd. Believe me, it's been hard not to. I just like the experience of getting it the day it comes out. I remember ruining System of a Down's new Cd's experience and NIN's with teeth by getting it earlier.

Yeah, I heard Maynard's voice was supposed to blended in more so than at the forefront. in Vicarious, I love how they did that. I get a darker feel to it by that. But I also hear it seems different than other songs.

I haven't had TOO much expectations on the album but a lot of what people said before had gotten me excited and from what I hear now I like. Like I've heard some real great things about "Wings for Marie/10,000 Days, being their best song, and about being saddest piece of music they've ever heard multiple times. Of course, I'll have to hear it all for myself still. But what I have heard so far I like.

Re: Tool - 10,000 Days

..

I thought about waiting until the real CD came out but I figured what the hell .. but I still intend on buying the CD.

I feel unforunate because even if I get to see them on tour this time I know i'm not going to get the Maynard performance from concerts back in the Aenema days. I've only seen some clips on the internet. I want to see the crazy-***, blue-painted Maynard. I just hope they come somewhere around this area. They aren't coming close to FL in their pre-Euro tour.

Anyway, I'll be doing another run or two through the new one tomorrow during work. I think i'll really end up appreciating it but I can't imagine it getting more personal play from me than Aenema.

As for Wings for Marie, I won't go into it much more because you haven't heard it ... but I did notice there seems to be a real deep-seeded sadness in that song. I'm assuming it is about his mother and that maybe she passed away sometime in recent years. I know I read she had a stroke and was paralyzed when he was younger. At least that is what I read ...

Re: Tool - 10,000 Days

..

ok, nevermind .. one quick google brings up wikipedia ...

Quote:
"Marie" is the middle name of Maynard James Keenan's deceased mother, Judith Marie Keenan.

As Keenan explains on commentary on aMOTION, his mother suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. The length of time between her paralysis and her death was 27 years, or approximately 10,000 days. [6]

Yeah, he stopped doing some or most of the things in Aenima days. I got into in '97 but I didn't see them till I saw them 2 times for Lateralus tour. In Tampa up high in nose bleeds (still sounded amazing..even though sundome sucks for sound) and in Daytona the yr after on the floor but they had seats and everyone stood which was pretty cool. No one bumping into me haha. I hate that. Especially when it's a band I'm trying to take it all in. Hopefully, they come in the fall. Or I'll go to GA if I have to haha.

yeah, Judith had to do with her too but totally a different subject as you know. I heard she was paralyzed but didn't know about 27 yrs thing till recently. It may be a or just one connection with 10,000 days. I don't know, would they or he really name a whole album based on just her being paralyzed? I wouldn't think so. I'm sure there is many different meanings to it.

That's funny, I was going to go to that SunDome show but the tickets were pretty high priced and I wasn't really that into them then so I passed it up. And yes, the SunDome sound really sucks. The only concert i've seen there that had good sound was Audioslave but I was right up in the front of the crowd so I probably couldn't have noticed the bad sound. I can't do the seat thing anymore. I've got to be up in the action.

Re: Tool - 10,000 Days

After a couple of listens, Vicarious might be the least impressive track on this album (with the exception of the "Viginti Tres". Vicarious went from great to mediocre with one line.

The whole album gives off a "Third Eye" kind of feel.

Which one line is that?

I listened to the album again today probably 3 times through and I am starting to take to the album a lot more. So far I really like Vicarious, Jambi, Rosetta Stoned, The Pot, Right In Two, and 10,000 Days.

Re: Tool - 10,000 Days

I've been fighting with every fiber not do download. I came very close 2 times. I got 1 song then deleted it right after without hearing it. Then I had this thought about listening to whole CD once then deleting it afterwards, so I got up to Wings for Marie, and deleted that along Jambi without hearing either. I just thought about getting it day it comes out and that experience of something new like with Lateralus. I want that feeling. It's been so hard though..ahhhhhhhhh.

Vicarious got mediocre with one line? What? Lyrically, I thought it was brilliant as well as musically I liked it. But brilliant because of the subject manner and how what Maynard says is true with us all as a whole. Or most of us haha.

Ah, just download it and listen ...

I think some people might be looking for the intricate lyrics in Lateralus but the lyrics of Vicarious are very straight-forward and yes, incredibly true to today's world. I think the videos of things like the bum fights and the beheadings overseas are very much point in case.

Yeah, and just the fact that we watch people die in movies, TV dramas and the news such on an every day basis. It's almost lost it's shock value even as depressing as it can be. That's a good point of the beheadings that were caught on tape. I didn't even think about that. But I thought people were gonna just think about the war in Iraqi and such which I didn't think you could just limit what he was saying to that.

And actually, for me Lateralus was more straight forward than anything they've ever done. Aenima was more vague to me. Took me awhile to realize some of the things. But I still haven't found the total connection with all the songs, even knowing the idea or general meaning of the songs but of course I still maintain what it means to me even in knowing.

Re: Tool - 10,000 Days

Ok, I gave in. I had to. I was going insane.

after first listen. I thought wow..but didn't know if it was a good one till 2nd listen. But goddamn. It's like most uncommericial/moody record I have ever heard. It's like they're trying your patience with it or wanted to throw something at you that you'd least expect but you know Tool does want they want and doesn't plan that.

Vicarious is in your face and not like anything on the record but it fits. Jambi starts out in your face then comes back down and hits you again lol. Wings for Marie/10,000 Days just sooo ****ing powerful. it's all very sad too. This like echoed by many from what I've seen. For me, it also could be my favorite Tool song of all time eventually. The Pot, at first, I was like wtf lol. Maynard singing acapulco was something new. Then I heard it again and it's a bad *** song. And I want to know who thought of Lipan Conjuring lol. Lost Keys was annoying in the beginning with that sound like they were sitting next to the speaker with their guitar/bass. And SERIOUSLY, Rosetta Stoned, is the most chaotic/twisted/weird song I have EVER heard. It's really good though. Intension seems to dive into the D/R/T mode a lil. Right In Two seems to do so as well a lil then picks up in your face. Viginiti Tres was weirdness.

It's weird, everything seemed better 2nd time I listened to it more so than the first. Maybe the expectations and thoughts of others kinda made me get thrown off at first by it all for some reason. So, far I really like it though. Seems like a progression or they picked up where they left off like in a way with Disp/reflection/triad but with heavy moments and a lot of build up. But it fits though. Overall the record takes you on this trip it seems.
