Seriously ... I can't remember a song giving me goosebumps but 10,000 Days did. Anyone who doesn't know the back story about Maynard's mom might not feel the same way .. or if they don't know much about Maynard. Hearing Maynard, who has always been anti organized religion, telling his mom to go up and shake her fist at the doors of Heaven telling them to let her in .. well, it is crazy good.

Take it slow. There is a lot to absorb. If you like harder stuff go back to Aenima. For lighter stuff go with Lateralus. Both are classics. There isn't a single skip-over song on either of those albums besides maybe the segues but if you listen all the way through they seem to just flow along with everything. If you like 10,000 Days (the song) and Right In Two you might want to start with Lateralus. It was pretty cool that I heard Opiate for the first time about 3 weeks ago ... so I got a little extra "new Tool" recently. I was shocked that even way back then they were very good. I can listen to Opiate all the way through 10,000 Days at work and the only song I consider skipping at this point is Intension.

well, it's I think it's that and also his mom was very religious even still after she was paralyzed so he's speaking in her beliefs and he is saying she never lived a life, never lived a lie but saved his. (Maybe it had to do with the abuse he had which is talked about in "jimmy" and how that song is saying "who you have become since the abuse" he was quote to saying when it was done live). I think he sees her as this pillar of faith because of her maintaining of what she believed in as I mentioned and what she did for him. Interesting at the end where he says "it's time for you to bring me home." It sounds as if he is saying put in a good word for him if it all exists. Unless, it's still in her point of view. |

I don't remember the line but I got a "put in a good word for me" feeling from Maynard. Where he is basically saying "ok, just in case i've been wrong this whole time, put in a good word for me" ... Some people a toolnavy are misinterpreting some of the 10,000 Days lyrics as Maynard preaching religion but that seems a real stretch IMO.

yeah that's what I was getting too unless it's her point of view. lol yeah, the ones who are thinking he's preaching religion are missing it or they don't see the point of view changes or something. That's just way off haha. As for getting off to a start in Tool, Pacers fan. Just listen to 10,000 Days and if you like it enough, go on to their past stuff. We're all turned on to music different ways. I don't think you need to start a certain way or a certain album. I got into them by Ænima cuz it was their recent CD at the time. You can still see the progression from where they came from to where they are now after you've digested it all. It's also been talked about that they may have sprinkled in some past work to show that hope they gave in the other albums. But now it seems they feel like no one listened. That is why this album is more of like a mourn or sadness for the way things are. To me it sounds as if they're picking up where they left off musically with Lateralus and the last 3 songs that intertwined in Disposition/Reflection/Triad. Doesn't mean it's better than Lateralus though. It still needs test of time for that. |

Re: Tool - 10,000 Days
..
So far i'm still holding on to ... Aenima > Lateralus = 10,000 Days > Undertow > Opiate I think maybe 1 more great song (maybe replace Intension) and I'd hold 10,000 Days nearly at the Aenima level. But I need to start listening to some other stuff ... I've been listening to too damned much Tool lately.

Re: Tool - 10,000 Days
lol i was looking around on Youtube and came across this. Maynard acting in a small indie film called Sleeping Dogs Lie with one of the guys from RATM. He's hilarious. It's not that much but also there's behind the scenes stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut7Z_1PvVdM man, here's another where he ****s up "parabola" live and throws the mic (they played ticks and leeches before it apparently even with a modifier for it live must hurt his voice). but someone said he came out and they played it parabola again so. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsxxHgAj4rw Last edited by Dissonance; 05-14-2006 at 10:53 PM. |

The earlier stuff has kind of a different sound. It's a lot darker and sludgier. I'm still not blown away by 10,000 Days. I'm a fan of Tool but not really a Tool fan. I mean, they have as dedicated a fan base as their is in music and I don't really consider myself to be a card carrying member of that group, even though I love their music. I worshiped at the alter of Aenima when I was younger which is why I like the band. I didn't really like where they took their sound in Lateralus but the album was so good it made up for it. 10,000 Days is similar to Lateralus in sound except I don't like the songs as much. Don't get me wrong, the muscianship is fantastic, maybe the best it's ever been. But what originally appealed to me about Tool was the way they mashed their sweeping prog rock epics into a format that was recognizable as a rock song. It's like they took Pink Floyd and Dream Theatre, threw them in a blender, and then stuck them in the freezer. There was just as much behind their music then as there is now, but they made their point a lot quicker. What now takes them 8-9 minutes to say used to take them 4-6, and it felt like 3. It was amazing how much they were able to pack into each song. They would still air it out at times and weren't strangers to the 10+ minutes numbers, but they had the more concise explosive songs to go along with it. On Lateralus these "shorter" songs started clocking in at 7,8, and 9 minutes, but they were so good that it was OK. On 10,000 Days I just don't think some of the tracks warent it, they tend to drag. Not that's even a bad thing, it just kind of runs contrary to the Tool sound that makes me love Tool. From the begining the songs have gotten progressively longer with each album. I thought Aenima just had the perfect balance. It had the musicianship and progressions of Lateralus and 10,000 Days all while kind of keeping it under the roof of rock music. |
