Re: Jay-Z thinks Rap should be looked at as poetry
did you listen to the part where he says if you take away the music & rhythm and just put the words on a wall you are still looking at works of absolute genius in certain cases?

What do I think? Times without number I have called Nas one of the greatest poets of our time. That's what I think.

Re: Jay-Z thinks Rap should be looked at as poetry
i don't know, i think if nas wrote poems he would be one of the greatest poets of our time. but he seems to write songs, not poems. it's difficult for me to consider someone a poet when they work within the medium of music. the point that some of the greats are indeed some of the greatest 'writers' of all time is 100% correct imho.

If you strip the beats off the song, and it was just acapella, would it not be considered spoken word poetry?

Re: Jay-Z thinks Rap should be looked at as poetry
there are beats & the words are part of a song, is the thing. so ya that's a pretty gigantic IF that you are throwing out there. if rappers chose to work w/in the medium of spoken word poetry and not w/in the medium of rap music i would certainly w/out question consider them to be poets.
