Back in the 'Lou
It's been many years since the Hawks left St. Louis. But Pro Basketball is back in the 314! The Sacremento Kings have moved to the banks of the Mississippi to become the St. Louis Kings. The Kings bring a young, high-energy brand of basketball to St. Louis, including a marketable star in Blake Griffin.
Head Coach Lorenzo Romar will be the man guiding the Kings. Formerly the coach at St. Louis University, he knows the area well. He also knows that he has a young, athletic team that will play much like his Washington Huskies did in the Pacific Northwest. Blake Griffin is the unquestioned star on this team. A huge scorer who can do just about anything, he's going to be the key to the Kings offense anywhere on the floor. Griffin will have to elevate his game to a new level in the 'Lou. While Griffin may be the star, there is little doubt that the most important player to wear the Purple and Silver is captain Andre Iguodola. Iggy will be entrusted with about every role but primary scorer on this team. Iggy will handle secondary ball-handling and scoring roles, as well as guarding the opposition's most dangerous wing every night. Jrue Holiday will be the man at the point for the Kings. A very athletic PG who can spark the Kings transition offense, he's going to be looked at to elevate his defensive game against top opposing points. At the 2 guard spot, young Kemba Walker gets the nod. He'll be counted on to add some outside presence and play his defensive matchup to a draw. At 22, he's got time with Andre Iguodola to learn the nuances of his position. Tyrus Thomas will be the man in the middle in St. Louis. A freakish athlete who can challenge any shot, his job is to rebound and make opponents think about coming into the paint. Needs polish on the offensive end, but the D is what is going to make Tyrus special. The bench is dominated by versatile options. Brandon Roy and Lamar Odom can both cover 3 positions, with Roy being the most important player not starting. Roy will take on backup minutes at 1-3, and will be counted on first in case of any injuries. Odom will back up the 3, 4, and 5 spots. Robin Lopez will also get some run in the post. DJ Augustin will also be in line for some minutes as a 3rd PG option in case Roy is pushed into duty elsewhere on the floor. Prediction: 44-39, 7th seed in West.
