I think the problem is that the NBA draft is too much of a crapshoot these days and that it is probably more valuable to trade your pick for a player who is more established in the league. Mussleman being a good eye of talent knows what he has and know what he wants. Unless you have a few picks to take chances, what does a team do when their pick doesn’t work out? K.Brown was a number 1 pick and is now being shopped around because of his shortcomings. Top picks like E.Curry, T.Chandler, S.Swift, M.Fizer, and many others are part of the trade rumors. D.Miles was just traded and already is part of a few new trade scenarios. The Warriors have had too many busts in the draft to go that route. Their 3 picks in '01 have worked out, but Richardson has not become the player I thought he would become. Yes, its still early but how long do we wait for J-Rich to become a more dominant 2 guard? How long to we give Dunleavy to adjust his game to the pro style? We got Arenas in the second round and now he'll be a hot commodity in next year’s free agent market.
Laker's lineup= signed a bunch of journey men, signed Shaq, traded for the 13th pick in Kobe=NBA titles
King's lineup = traded for Bibby, Webber, and Christie. Signed Vlade, drafted Peja w/ their 14th pick and Turkoglu w/ the 16th pick in 00' and were one game from the Finals.
Dallas's lineup = traded for Nash, Finley, Bradley, Van Exel, LaFrentz and now have the best record in the league.
Nets lineup = traded for Kidd, Van Horn (before the trade), Jefferson, Collins, drafted Kittles and got ran out the state in the Finals.
Unlike the NFL and MLB, it just too hard to rebuild through the draft. Orlando got close by drafting Nick Anderson, Shaq, Dennis Scott, signed H.Grant, and traded for Penny. They did challenge for the title, but now that team is no more.
My view on this now is to let other teams draft, develop these players and THEN fork out the money when you know what you’re getting. Get your team in position to sign free agents like Orlando did to get Mcgrady and Hill. Like Denver and Cleveland is doing now. Move down in the draft and take your chances there. There are many mid to late round picks that are good players. Why have everyone hate you for drafting a bust(s), when everyone will love you for signing the perfect player for the team.
