Re: Prediction: Monta Ellis
I'd take him as a good starter with his current attributes. At this stage I see him being a David Wesley or even Sam Cassell type pull-up shooter if he develops his PG skills. He's too weak to drive in and according to the predraft combine, too slow to blow past his defender. Currently the Warriors have a star PG in Baron Davis so I expect them to utilize Ellis as a SG, moving JRich to the 3. Dunleravy has been named in too many trade rumors for me to expect him to stay long. Problem is, I don't think it's in Ellis' best interest to ignore his PG potential. Sure, the Warriors should help him develop his scoring ability, but I'd take Sam Cassell over David Wesley (sans defense) any day. Speaking of defense, I think that will be Ellis' achilles heel. Any player can be at least decent at defense if he wants to be good at defense. It's a matter of the desire to develop defensive skills. Almost all players that defensive liabilities are players that don't want to play D. Ellis has a serious attitude problem when it comes to defense, and that will keep many coaches from voting for him to be in the allstar game. Unless he changes his attitude (unlikely), Ellis will be held back from true stardom.
