Mike Montgomery article

Quote:
This brings us to the current season, which begins when the Warriors open training camp in Hawaii nine days from now. Montgomery doesn't look quite as odd in Warriors gear as he did a year ago. He clearly is clued in to the NBA hierarchy, where the players come first and the coach is nearly always expendable.
He has a better handle on players' personalities, strengths and weaknesses. He knows what kind of team the Warriors should be, and how they might best go about winning games.

"I tried to give them respect," he said of his new players. "I tried to listen, maybe too much. Some (coaches) demean people, some threaten people, some intimidate people. That's never been my style."
In fact, Montgomery said Davis encouraged him to be more vocal -- even critical, if need be.
"Two or three times he came up to me and said, 'Coach, you've got to tell me when I screw up out there,'" Montgomery said. "'I may come back at you a little bit, but I want you to tell me. Don't leave me hanging out there.'"
