Re: Baron wants to sign extention with the W's.
You guys need to be careful. Don't get too carried away with the excitement of a nice playoff run. You need to improve this team to be a contender. Better depth to withstand injuries and match up with other teams.
Toronto had limited playoff success in 2001 and broke the bank to keep that core together thinking they could make a run in a very weak Eastern conference the next few years. It was a huge mistake. Ended up with an old, capped out team that wasn't good enough to contend but not bad enough to get good draft picks. No ability to withstand injuries.
You have Baron under contract for 2 more years at big $$$. He has 33+ mill in security in just those 2 years. He has made a fortune in the league. There is no reason for either party to need an extension.
JRich's contract runs 2 years past Barons current deal and you definitely shouldn't extend him past that. Plus, if he wants to be on a winner he should not be looking to cash in now and take a huge chunk of the cap space.
You have key players making 2mill or less. Pietrus, Ellis, Biedrins, and Barnes. You have to sign or replace all of them in the next couple of years. The perimeter guys are probably all close to MLE money (5mill) and Biedrins could be a 10mill player by then. That's 25 mill.
If you extend Davis then in 3 years you will have Davis/JRich/Jax/Al earning close to 50 mill. Add on the 25 mill for the others and you are at ridiculous levels. And that's just to keep your top 8 and add nothing more. You need a decent 9th and 10th man to get through injuries.
I think you should wait one more season before making that kind of commitment. See how Baron's body holds up and how the team comes together over a full season. You had better be a top 4 team in the West to make that kind of commitment. Otherwise Baron should be signing an 8- 10mill extension so the team can add talent around him.
I hope GS doesn't end up as a capped out team that can't get past the second round.
