Wright Now Has Nellie's Attention

In fewer than 14 minutes of Tuesday's 126-122 exhibition victory against Seattle, Warriors' rookie Brandan Wright showed what all the fuss was about when Golden State acquired him in exchange for Jason Richardson: seven points (3-for-4 floor), six rebounds and a steal.

"He definitely got my attention. I have to do a double-take on him now," said Warriors' coach Don Nelson, who hadn't planned to play Wright on Tuesday and has said in the past that he expects Wright to visit the NBA Development League this season.

Wright didn't look as if he needed any D-League seasoning in knocking down a 19-foot jumper in OT.

"That's something I really worked on in preparation for this season," Wright said of his perimeter jump shot. "You've definitely got to add to your game coming to the NBA. You've got to add something every year."
I'm glad that Wright stepped up after hearing that Nelson was going to send him(plus 2 other rookies) to the D-League to start the 07/08 season. I hope this changes Nelsons mind, because I believe that Wright deserves to be in Warriors uniform on opening night.

Thoughts?

Re: Wright Now Has Nellie's Attention

I've been open minded about the D-League in general.

Proponents say the D-League allows PT to players with talent who might otherwise be relegated to the bench if on the big league rosters. Those who oppose the D-League (especially for 1st rounders) argue that while not getting PT in the NBA, a big-league practice day-in and day-out can be more beneficial than actual game time play in a league of inferior talent.

I think both sides of the argument hold truth. The call of whether or not a trip to the D-League would benefit a player ultimately depends on the individual. Some require PT to craft their skills (in which case a demotion to the D-League would behoove them). For other players (in my mind, players who typically have more self-discipline and can improve themselves in the limited context of practice), keeping them on the major league squad is more beneficial.

In the case of Brandan Wright, I feel that he ought to be kept on the Warriors opening day roster. His attitude of 'gotta bring something new to the table - gotta improve year-in, year-out' is the work ethic of someone who's serious about their game. With that work ethic and his potential, you've GOTTA keep him around major league talent to push the envelope on a daily basis.

This guy is going to be something special.
