J-Rich & Fortson to SAC for B.Jackson, Hedo, & Funderburke

GS Trades J-Rich & Fortson

SAC trades Bobby Jackson, Turkoglu, and Funderburke

If Arenas leaves this is the supposed trade that will be announced within 24 hours. It is said to be a done deal

With this trade the Warriors will have $21.3 million in cap room for 2004.

Warriors lineup

PG- Jackson/Sura
SG- Dunleavy/Welsch/Pietrus
SF-Jamison/ Hedo
PF-Murphy/Funderburke
C- Dampier/Foyle

I really dont see any reason for the Kings to do this. Who would back up Bibby?

i would like that trade for the warriors. they get rid of a worthless contract in fortson and jrich who needs to learn to play some D. We drafted Pietrus and i think he will be the SG of the future. BTW there is no way dunleavy can play SG. he is just too slow and too unathletic

I agree with you, somewhat.

But, the Kings need some beef at the PF, especially with Webber out until (what was it February or something? Tell me if you know). Fortson is one of the best rebounders per 48 minutes in the game and is not afraid to mix it up with the likes of Shaq, Malone, and R. Wallace. No one else can really do that for your team right now.

J-Rich would be the offensive firepower at the SG that they sorely lack with the aging Christie. Not to mention that he will become the heir apparent at SG when Christie retires (I think Doug is 35 now).

As far as who would play back up PG, I assume Christie and Cleaves. Not a big issue at 10-12 minutes per game.

I'd think that as a Kings fan you might be happy considering that you are trading three subs for a rising star and a more than capable PF that you will sorely need for the upcoming season.

Arenas won't leave if Fortson is traded, since G-State will be able to match the Clip's contract... UNLESS that any of trio of Kings is a high money guy I don’t know about.

This trade will be a better one if Sura is part of the trade as well, so he can backup Bibby.

I really don’t want to see my favorite player get traded, but at least he’s getting traded to a good team.

Anyway, how’d you know about this!? If this doesn’t happen, I’ll despise you…!

Gilbert Arenas signed an offer sheet with the Wizards. Now lets see if this trade goes down.

The extra cap space will go to:

a) signing a star in '04 (T-Mac, Garnett, Sheed?)

b) signing a few nice role players (Jamaal Magloire, Brent Barry?)

c) re-signing Foyle at around $5-$6million per year

d) stashing money aside for their young players or a young FA in the future

Trading Fortson won't allow the Warriors to match the Wizards' (as it turns out) offer. CBA rules mandate that the salaries match up in a trade...which means if the Warriors trade away Fortson, or anyone else, they have to take back as much salary, putting them in the same place.

Teams sometimes trade for expiring contracts, which usually free up space the next off-season.

The only exception I've ever heard to that is if you trade for a player who:

A. has a team option for the coming season, and

B. has an unguaranteed salary for the coming season, and

C. will retire immediately after you trade for them

If all three of those are true, you can immediately dump payroll by having the team that player is currently on exercise the option, trade the player to you for equal salaries you want to dump and then the player retires...then, since the money is unguaranteed, you simply do not pay them and the money drops off your salary books.

Of course, good luck finding enough players like that to pare off enough salary from the Warriors to drop them enough under the cap to match Arenas' offer. The only player I know of who is in that situation is Arvydas Sabonis, and he only makes in the $3-4 million range...so trading for him would only save you that much against the cap.

Finding a confluence of all three factors is nearly impossible. The Warriors essentially have zero chance of dropping under the cap in 15 days.

They essentially can't dump salary right now. What they can do is trade for equal contracts that expire at the end of the year and then, next off-season, their payroll will be lower.

That's what makes the cap a restriction...it's very, very hard to get from over the cap to under the cap immediately, and it even takes some doing to do it in one season. The Warriors will have to find teams willing to trade expiring contracts (other teams also value cap space, so they may not be willing) for the highly-paid players the Warriors have.

I think this trade originated from a rumor on the San Jose Mercury News sports message board
