San Diego Hoops - 04-05

Time to start a new thread for the new year. I havent heard anything as far as how people have done in the summer leagues. Any word out there? Any transfers coming/going?

There wont be an el camino this year in san diego, we may never see another el camino here, IMO the most talented team in the history of San Diego HOops. If they had a coach who could coach, they might have challenged for a national championship. Its rare that a team has 6 D-1 calliber players on the same team.

Anyway, la costa canyon, while not being deep, probably will be a top 2 team just because they have the great white hope in chase budinger. Only a junior, he will feast now that there arent many big min around to stop him. Hoover should have a decent year with super soph luster. El Camino this year i think will be LUCKY if they crack .500. They have a super junior in Navarre, but outside of him, almost no one with significant varsity experience. That is, unless they bring in some transfers, which i think would be hard after the eyebrows raised last year when the snagged austin and alkazin from carlsbad.

anyway, bigmike, demeslai, and other SD hoops guys, please post any info you have on the offseasn.

From what I hear, Luster has had a dissappointing summer...

...personally, I don't care. That guy is amazing.

He's been playing on the SoCal All Stars AAU team going against guys who are a lot older...with his height, he's going to struggle for awhile until he learns how to adjust. He's a crafty player, he'll be just fine. If a big-time school passes on him because of his height, they'll be sorry...that guy is going to be good, and very very exciting.

Hoover should be good...they lost Mike Hall and that other guard, but they get back JayDee and Todd Doxey...another very talented sophomore guard. Also, they get that Huge oafy center back who's a junior...he's not horrible, I guess...if he works on his hands, JayDee would have 30 assists per game.

Buddinger's likely going to have a monster year. I mean, player of the year in the county ahead of Gyno, Lorenzo, Rico...that's impressive. La Costa Canyon will probably be very good simply because of him.

I think we (Torrey Pines) could be pretty good. We only lose one starter, and we've got some good junior talent...if we pull it together we could be a top team in the county.

There's no clear-cut favorite in the county as far as premier teams go, for the first time in a few years. El Camino is no longer stacked...no Gyno, no Justin Armstrong, no Mikel Watson...it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

The good thing is there's a TON of good talent in the county. A lot of guys with high-major college potential...Buddinger, JayDee Luster, maybe Doxey, Tyrone Shelley (29.5 ppg!! as a freshman!!! too bad they went 5-18 though...) Todd Lowenthal (Poway) and Raymond Williams (Steele Canyon)

It'll be a fun year. Can't wait for the TP prep classic, that's always fun.

First off, you completely butchered my name, but that's alright.

Rancho Buena Vista will suck....But Cameron Harris should be a monster. He's the only GOOD player on RBV, so he can be All CIF IMO. He should easily be All Avocado League.

BigMike named most of the bigger prospects in SD County. I think El Camino is going to suck this year. They'll be lucky to sniff .500. Ray Johnson, the coach of El Camino, came to Rancho to help coach at a camp, and he didn't seem too great of a coach. Just a normal coach. And with a below average roster (although they have Marquis), they should be well, a below average team.

That's all for now, I have to do homework.

Anyone who follows el camino basketball can see that johnson is a terrible coach. Hes only been blessed with great talent, since were always getting international transfers, and transfers from other states due to the military base here, not to mention transfers like austin and alkazin last year.

On talent off years, ec does ZERO. I remember one year about 5 years ago, their best player was this sorry white guy...johnsons true colors showed on their record that year. Any real coach would have undefeated seasons the last two years of El Camino...theyve had like 9 D1 players on their squad in two years: (Watson, Sprink, Austin, Navarre, Alkazain, Daniels, Pomare, Armstrong, etc.)

THis year, unless they get a transfer, they will NOT hit 500 i estimate. Their JV and freshman teams last year were terrible, so no help there either. Navaree will get runner up though for player of the year in the avocado league, next to budinger.

Oceanside will be a team to watch. Those guys average like 5 wins a year, but last year, they had about 4 freshman on varsity, and had a freshman team that without those guys, won almost all of their games. It was rumored that a player or two would switch to EC this year, but if not, look for them to have a MUCH improved team the next couple of years.

LCC moved to the Palomar league (which is now brutal) so Navarre's going to have a good shot at POY.

During freshman summer league, when all of Oceansides freshman (including the ones on Varsity, like Javier, Denzel, ETC.) were on the same team, they were the only team to beat our team. They beat us by six, and that's because Denzel was busting threes everywhere at the end.

rivals.com has budinger at number 33 for class of 2006. Neither shelley nor luster is even on the top 40 list for 2007.

At least Luster is a 3 star on Insiders and Shelley is a 4 star.

No love for san diego. His Junior and Senior years, Gyno pomare DOMINATED the competion, including top LA guys who were ranked a lot higher than him. But pomare wasnt on the radar hardly at all for the ratings websites. If used properly, he could be the MVP for USD this year.

Gyno's going to be a force in the WCC. He's a good athlete, and I have to believe his touch from inside is as good as any freshman in the country.

I can see Luster not being listed as a high-profile guy right now because of height. But once more and more people see his quickness and court vision, he'll move up. And Shelley is a lock for being top 50 in a year or 2, why he isn't now is just beyond me.

In 05 and 06, they'll be nationally known top 50-100 guys for sure.
